Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. A malfunction of the MDPS motor can be quickly diagnosed using the Kia Diagnostic System (KDS).

    1. Self-diagnosis: Checks for malfunctions and provides DTC codes.

    2. Current Data: Check the system input/output status.

    3. Operation check: Check the operating status of the system.

    4. Additional function: Controls other functions, including system parameter setting, calibration adjustment, and other functions.

Replacement

  1. Remove the MDPS unit.

(Refer to Electric Power Steering - "MDPS Rack and Housing")

  2. Disconnect the MDPS connector (A).

  3. Remove the MDPS (A) after loosening the mounting bolts.

    Tightening torque: 8.0–12 N·m

Installation

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.

  2. Perform "EPS Type Recognition" using the KDS.

(Refer to MDPS System - "Diagnosis by KDS")

  3. Perform "SAS Calibration" using the KDS.

(Refer to MDPS System - "Diagnosis by KDS")

  4. Check and erase the DTC.

  5. Perform the MDPS performance test.

(Refer to Electric Power Steering - "Troubleshooting")

Diagnosis Using KDS

[EPS Type Recognition]

  1. Since the MDPS can store various tuning maps with different steering feels in the ECU, and different steering feels depending on the application area and engine type of the vehicle, it is necessary to set the appropriate codes for the application area and vehicle.

[EPS Type Recognition Procedure]

  1. Connect the self-diagnosis connector (16-pin) located at the bottom of the driver's side panel to the KDS.

  2. Turn on the self-diagnosis device after turning the ignition on.

  3. Set the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.

  4. After selecting "Vehicle Model" and "System," select "EPS Type Recognition" on the vehicle selection screen of the diagnostic tool.

  5. Clear the diagnostic trouble code.

  6. Turn the ignition OFF and wait at least 20 seconds before starting the engine. Then check that the MDPS operates correctly.

[SAS Calibration]

  • The steering angle sensor is a built-in function of the MDPS torque angle sensor (TAS). It detects the steering wheel angle and the steering wheel speed of the driver.

The steering wheel angle and steering wheel speed are used to control damping and return control in addition to the main steering assist.

[SAS Calibration Procedure]

  1. Connect the self-diagnosis connector (16-pin) located at the bottom of the driver's side panel to the KDS.

  2. Turn on the self-diagnosis device after turning the ignition on.

  3. Set the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.

  4. After selecting "Vehicle Model" and "System," select "SAS Calibration" on the vehicle selection screen of the diagnostic tool.

  5. Clear the diagnostic trouble code.

  6. Turn the ignition OFF and wait at least 20 seconds before starting the engine. Then check that the MDPS operates correctly.
