Starting the engine with a smart key (if equipped)

WARNING
- Always wear appropriate shoes when driving. Inappropriate shoes (high heels, ski boots, etc.) may interfere with the operation of the brake and accelerator pedals.
- Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed. The vehicle may move and cause an accident.
- Wait until the engine speed is normal. The vehicle may move suddenly if the brake pedal is released while the engine speed is high.
NOTE - Kickdown mechanism (if equipped) The kickdown mechanism prevents unintentional full-throttle driving by requiring the driver to apply more force to press the accelerator pedal. However, if the pedal can be pressed to about 80%, it will be easier to press it fully to reach full throttle. This is not a malfunction but a normal condition
- Keep the smart key on your person or place it inside the vehicle.
- Make sure the parking brake is firmly applied.
- Manual transmission - Fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the gear lever to neutral. Keep the clutch and brake pedals depressed while starting the engine.
Automatic transmission - Shift the gear lever to P (Park).
Fully depress the brake pedal.
The engine can also be started with the gear lever in N (Neutral).
Start driving at a moderate speed. (Avoid sudden acceleration and braking.)
WARNING If the engine stalls while the vehicle is moving, do not attempt to shift the gear lever to P (Park). If traffic and road conditions permit, you may shift the gear lever to N (Neutral) while the vehicle is moving and press the ENGINE START/STOP button to attempt to restart the engine.
- If the smart key is too far away, even though it is inside the vehicle, the engine may not start.
- When the ENGINE START/ STOP button is in ACC or ON mode, if any door is opened, the system checks where the smart key is located. If the smart key is not inside the vehicle, the indicator "
" or the "KEY OUT" indicator flashes. If all doors are then closed, the buzzer will sound for 5 seconds.

NOTE
- If the battery is discharged or if the smart key is not working properly, the engine can be started by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button with the smart key.
- If the brake light fuse blows, the engine cannot be started normally.
Replace the fuse with a new one. If this is not possible, the engine can be started by holding the ENGINE START/STOP button for 10 seconds while in ACC mode. The engine can be started without pressing the brake pedal. However, for safety reasons, always press the brake pedal before starting the engine. WARNING Do not hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for more than 10 seconds except in case of a blown brake light fuse.
