Vehicle weight
This section provides useful information for correctly loading the vehicle and/or trailer, to keep the loaded vehicle weight within its maximum design capacity, with or without a trailer. Correct loading ensures the vehicle performs at its best. Before loading the vehicle, study the following terms, which are needed to establish the permitted weights for the vehicle, with or without a trailer, based on the vehicle specifications and the certification plate:
Vehicle kerb weight This is the weight of the vehicle with a full fuel tank and all standard equipment. It does not include occupants, luggage or optional equipment.
Curb weight Indicates the weight of the new vehicle at delivery from the dealer, including any accessories.
Additional weight Indicates the weight added to the vehicle's curb weight, including luggage and optional equipment.
GAW (Gross Axle Weight) Indicates the total weight carried by each axle (front and rear), including the vehicle curb weight and the payload.
GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) Indicates the maximum permissible weight that a single axle (front or rear) can carry. These values are shown on the certification label.
The total load on each axle must never exceed its GAWR.
GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) Equals the vehicle curb weight plus the actual additional weight and the weight of the occupants.
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) Indicates the maximum permissible weight of the fully loaded vehicle (including all optional equipment, accessories, occupants and luggage).
This weight is shown on the certification label affixed to the driver's side door pillar (or the front passenger side).
Overloading
WARNING - Vehicle weight The maximum permitted gross axle weights and the maximum permitted gross vehicle weight are shown on the plate affixed by the manufacturer to the driver's (or front passenger's) door. Exceeding these values may cause an accident or damage the vehicle. You can calculate the load weight by weighing each item (or passenger) before loading it into the vehicle. Take extreme care not to overload the vehicle.
