Electric power steering
The power steering system uses the engine to assist you in steering the vehicle. If the engine is off or if the hydraulic power steering system malfunctions, the vehicle can still be steered, but more steering effort will be required.
Electric power steering (EPS) is controlled by the power steering control unit, which responds to steering torque, steering wheel position, and vehicle speed to control the motor.
The steering wheel becomes heavier as vehicle speed increases, and lighter as vehicle speed decreases, for better steering wheel control.
If you notice any change in the steering effort required during normal vehicle operation, have the system inspected by a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorized Kia dealer/service partner.
NOTICE
The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation:
- The EPS warning light does not illuminate.
- Steering effort may be high immediately after the ignition is turned on. This occurs while the system performs the EPS system diagnosis. When the diagnosis is complete, the steering wheel will return to normal.
- A clicking sound may be heard from the EPS relay after the ignition switch is turned to the ON or LOCK position.
- A motor noise may be heard when the vehicle is stationary or traveling at low speed.
- If the electric power steering system does not operate normally, the warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster. The steering wheel may become difficult to control or may operate abnormally. In this case, have the system checked by a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorized Kia dealer/service partner.
- Steering effort increases if the steering wheel is turned continuously when the vehicle is not moving. However, after a few minutes, it will return to normal conditions.
- When you operate the steering wheel at low temperature, an abnormal noise may occur. If the temperature rises, the noise will disappear. This is a normal condition.
- When the charging system warning light is illuminated or the voltage is low (when the alternator (or battery) is not operating normally or malfunctioning), the steering wheel may become heavy and difficult to control, or operate abnormally.
