Repair Procedures

Removal

  1. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the alignment mark on the chain cover and oil pump assembly to position the No. 1 cylinder piston at top dead center on the compression stroke.
  2. Remove the timing chain cover and oil pump assembly. (Refer to Valve Timing - "Timing Chain Cover and Oil Pump Assembly")
  3. Before removing the timing chain, mark the timing chain with an identification number according to the sprocket position, because the TDC alignment mark on the chain may be worn off.
  4. Remove the automatic timing chain tensioner (A), then remove the tensioner arm (B).
  5. Remove the timing chain (A).
  6. Remove the timing chain guide (A).

Inspection

  1. Inspect the tensioner arm and chain guide for excessive wear, cracks, or damage. Replace as necessary.
  2. Make sure the tensioner piston moves smoothly.

Installation

  1. Set the crankshaft locating pin (A) at approximately 3° from the vertical centerline. As a result, the No. 1 cylinder piston is at top dead center on the compression stroke.
  2. Align the timing mark on the exhaust camshaft sprocket and the intake CVVT sprocket with the top surface of the cylinder head. As a result, piston No. 1 is at top dead center on the compression stroke.
  3. Install the timing chain guide (A).

    Tightening torque: 18.6 – 22 N·m

  4. Install the timing chain (A).
  5. Install the timing chain tensioner lever (A) and the timing chain tensioner (B), then remove the stopper pin.

    Tightening Torque: 9.8–11.8 N·m

  6. Rotate the crankshaft 2 revolutions in the normal direction (clockwise when viewed from the front), then check the alignment mark.
  7. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
