Repair Procedures

Removal

Engine removal is not necessary for this procedure.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. (Refer to Air Intake and Exhaust System - "Air Cleaner").
  3. Remove the right front wheel. (Refer to Suspension System - "Wheel")
  4. Remove the engine undercover and the right side cover. (Refer to Engine and Transaxle Assembly - Under Hood)
  5. Drain the engine coolant. (Refer to Cooling System — Engine Coolant)
  6. Remove the drive belt. (Refer to Drive Belt System - "Drive Belt")
  7. Remove the generator. (Refer to Engine Electrical System - "Generator")
  8. Remove the drive belt tensioner. (Refer to Drive Belt System - "Drive Belt Tensioner")
  9. Remove the water pump. (Refer to Cooling System - "Water Pump").
  10. Remove the crankshaft damper pulley. (Refer to Drive Belt System - "Crankshaft Damper Pulley")
  11. Remove the crankshaft position sensor (CKPS). (Refer to Engine Control/Fuel System - Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS)).
  12. Remove the warm-up catalytic converter (WCC) upper support (A).

    Tightening torque: 18.6 – 24 N·m

  13. Remove the intake manifold. (Refer to Intake and Exhaust Systems — Intake Manifold)
  14. Remove the thermostat and heater hose. (Refer to Cooling System - "Thermostat")
  15. Remove the cylinder head cover. (Refer to Cylinder Head Assembly - Cylinder Head Cover)
  16. Place a jack against the edge of the upper oil pan to support the engine.
  17. Remove the engine mount support bracket (A).

    Tightening Torque: 49.0–64 N·m

  18. Remove the timing chain cover and oil pump assembly (A).

Installation

  1. Install the timing chain cover and oil pump assembly.
    1. The sealant areas on the chain cover and mating parts (cylinder head, cylinder block) must be cleaned of engine oil and similar contaminants.
    2. Before installing the timing chain cover, apply liquid sealant to the gap between the cylinder head and cylinder block. Install the part within 5 minutes after applying the sealant.

Bead width: 4.0 mm (0.16 in)

    3. Apply liquid sealant to the chain cover and oil pump assembly. Then install the part within 5 minutes after applying the sealant. Apply the sealant as a continuous bead in each of the areas indicated below. Bead width: A: 1.5–2.5 mm (0.06–0.10 in), B: 2.5–3.5 mm (0.09–0.14 in), C: 3.0–4.0 mm (0.12–0.16 in).
    4. After applying engine oil, install a new O-ring (A) onto the cylinder block and ladder frame.
    5. Use the locating pins on the cylinder block and the holes in the chain cover and oil pump assembly as a reference to correctly install the chain cover and oil pump assembly. Tightening torque: A: 9.8–11.8 N·m — 1 pc, B: 18.6–24 N·m — 12 pcs, C: 44.1–54 N·m — 3 pcs.
  2. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
