  1. MF (maintenance-free) battery, as the name implies, is fully maintenance-free and does not have removable battery caps.

  2. The MF (maintenance-free) battery does not require topping up with water.

  3. The battery is fully sealed, except for small vent holes in the cover.

[AGM Battery for ISG System]

AGM batteries are used for particularly high vehicle electrical loads, depending on equipment and requirements. AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat; it is a glass fiber absorbent mat. AGM batteries are installed on models with high electrical loads/high-power consumers.

The constantly growing energy demand of modern automotive electrical systems requires even more powerful battery solutions.

Energy consumption is significant even when the vehicle is parked.

The slightly higher price compared to a battery of similar size is fully offset by the following advantages:

  • Significantly longer service life

  • Improved starting reliability at low temperatures

  • 100% maintenance-free

  • Low risk in the event of an accident (reduced environmental risk)

Recharging an AGM battery

The battery can be charged with chargers using a constant charging voltage of 14.8 V.

If possible, the battery temperature during charging should be between 20 °C and 30°C (86°F).

Only chargers with voltage stabilization (IU or WU curve) or chargers with an IUoU curve that have a trickle charge function may be used.

IU or WU charging technique

Optimized charging voltage for IU or WU: 14.7 V (at 20–30 °C - 86°F) for approximately 24 hours

Minimum charging voltage at 20 °C: 14.4 V

Maximum charging voltage at 20 °C: 14.8 V

Recommended charging current is 10% of capacity (for example, 60 Ah : 10 = charging current 6.0 A).

Adjustment

Battery Charging

In general, the automotive battery charging system has three forms.

  1. Constant current charging: The battery voltage gradually rises during charging with constant current setting. If the charging current and time are not properly controlled, the battery will be overcharged, so charging should be stopped after confirming that charging is complete.

    • Normal charging: Charging the battery over a long period at a low charging current.

    • Quick charging: Charging the battery for a short time at a high charging current.

  2. Constant voltage charging: The battery charging current gradually decreases during charging with constant voltage setting.

Inspection

Battery Voltage and Condition

Check the battery voltage and condition using a battery tester.

Battery Terminal

  1. Move the battery terminal (A) back and forth to check whether it is loose or corroded. If the terminals are corroded, clean them.

If the battery positive terminal is loose, disconnect the ground (GND) cable before attempting to remove or tighten the positive connection to prevent personal injury.

  2. If the battery clamp on the positive (+) battery terminal is loose:

    1. Turn the ignition off and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

    2. Tighten the battery clamp (A) on the positive (+) battery terminal.

      Positive (+) battery terminal:

      7,8–9.8 N·m

  3. If the battery clamp on the negative (-) battery terminal is loose:

    1. Tighten the battery clamp (A) on the negative (-) battery terminal.

      Negative (-) battery terminal:

      4,0–6 N·m

Battery Condition

Inspect the battery for damage or deformation. If the battery is severely damaged, deformed, or leaking, replace the battery.
