Description and Operation

Description

The mode control actuator is located on the heater unit.

It controls the position of the mode door using the mode control actuator based on the signal from the A/C control unit. Pressing the mode selection switch operates the mode control actuator. Mode changes in the following order: Vent → Bi-Level → Floor → Mix.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Turn the ignition off.

  2. Disconnect the mode control actuator connector.

  3. Make sure the mode control actuator operates in the defrost mode when 12 V is connected to terminal 4 and ground to terminal 3.

Make sure the mode control actuator operates in the vent mode when connected in reverse.

  4. Connect the mode control actuator connector.

  5. Turn the ignition on.

  6. Check the voltage between terminals 6 and 7.

    Specification

    With auto defog activated

Door Position Voltage (V) Fault Detection
    vent 0,9 ± 0,3 Low voltage: 0.1 V or less
    Bi-Level 0,9 ± 0,3
    Floor 4,1 ± 0,3
    Mix 4,1 ± 0,3
    Defog 4,1 ± 0,3 High voltage: 4.9 V or more

    With auto defog deactivated

Door Position Voltage (V) Fault Detection
    vent 2,5 ± 0,3 Low voltage: 0.1 V or less
    Bi-Level 2,5 ± 0,3
    Floor 4,1 ± 0,3
    Mix 4,1 ± 0,3
    Defog 4,1 ± 0,3 High voltage: 4.9 V or more

It will transmit the current actuator position to the controllers.

  7. If the measured voltage does not meet the specification, replace the mode control actuator with a known good one and check operation.

  8. If the problem is resolved, replace the mode actuator.

Replacement

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

  2. Remove the BCM.

(Refer to Body Electrical System - "Body Control Module (BCM)").

  3. Disconnect the connector (A) and remove the mode control actuator (B) after loosening the mounting screws.

  4. Installation is the reverse of removal.
