IN AN EMERGENCY

Engine overheating

~2min read

If the temperature gauge indicates overheating, the vehicle loses power, or you hear a loud knocking or hissing noise, the engine is most likely overheating.

WARNING

Switch off the ignition and, before carrying out any further work, make sure the radiator fan is not running: Carrying out any work near a running fan is a safety hazard.

The fan may continue to run even after the engine has been switched off, while the temperature in the engine compartment is still high. A running fan may strike you and cause serious injury.

Do not remove the cooling system caps
if the engine and radiator are hot. When the engine and radiator are hot, the hot coolant and steam are under pressure and can cause serious injury.

Open the engine hood ONLY after steam stops escaping from the engine compartment. Steam from an overheated engine is a safety hazard. Escaping steam can cause serious burns.

The engine coolant high temperature warning light illuminates:

1. Carefully pull over to the side of the road and stop as far away from traffic as possible.

2. Place the automatic transmission selector lever in P (Park), or the manual transmission shift lever in neutral.

3. Apply the parking brake.

4. Turn off the air conditioning.

5. Check whether steam or coolant is coming from under the engine hood or from the engine compartment.

If steam is coming from the engine compartment: Do not approach the front of the vehicle.

Stop the engine.

Wait until the steam stops, then open the engine hood and start the engine.

If neither steam nor coolant is escaping: Open the engine hood and leave the engine running at idle until it cools down.

CAUTION

If the engine is running and the radiator fan does not operate, the engine temperature will rise. Turn off the engine and contact a qualified service workshop. We recommend an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

6. Make sure the radiator fan is operating, and when the temperature drops, turn off the engine.

7. When the coolant has cooled, check its level in the reservoir.

If the level is low, check the radiator and hoses for leaks.

If you find a leak or other damage, or if the coolant continues to leak: Turn off the engine and contact a qualified service workshop. We recommend an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

If you find no problems, and the engine is cool and there are no leaks: Carefully add coolant to the required level (page 6-29).

CAUTION

If the engine continues to overheat, the cooling system must be inspected. Failure to repair it may cause serious engine damage. Consult a qualified service workshop. We recommend an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
