Stop and start function
This system reduces fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
When the vehicle starts, the system is activated automatically.
While driving, the system stops the engine (standby) when the vehicle comes to a stop (traffic jam, stopping at a light...).
System operating conditions
The engine goes into standby if:
- the vehicle has moved since its last stop;
- the gearbox is in neutral;
- the clutch pedal is released;
and
- the vehicle speed is below 3 km/h.
Do not drive your vehicle when the engine is in standby (the indicator
is displayed on the instrument panel).
The warning light
appears on the instrument panel and warns you that the engine is going into standby.
Vehicle equipment remains operational while the engine is stopped.
The engine restarts when you press the clutch pedal and select a gear.
If you leave your vehicle, an audible signal with the message “Switch off ignition” warns you that the engine is in standby and not stopped.
Before leaving the vehicle, switching off the ignition by pressing the engine stop button is mandatory (refer to the “Starting, stopping the engine” section).Specific feature of automatic engine restart
Under certain conditions, the engine may restart without any action on your part to ensure your safety and comfort.
This can happen in particular when:
- the outside temperature is too low or too high (below approximately 0°C or above approximately 30°C);
- the "see clearly" function is activated (refer to the "air conditioning" section in chapter 3);
- the battery is not sufficiently charged;
- the vehicle speed is above 7 km/h;
- the brake pedal is pressed repeatedly or the braking system requires assistance;
- ...
Note: when the passenger door is opened, some of these conditions prevent the engine from restarting automatically.
Engine in standby, the brake assistance is no longer operational.
Conditions preventing engine stop
- Depending on the vehicle, certain conditions prevent the system from stopping the engine, in particular:
- reverse gear is engaged;
- the engine hood is not locked;
- the driver's door is not closed;
- the driver's seat belt is not fastened;
- the outside temperature is too low or too high (below approximately 0°C or above approximately 30°C);
- the battery is not sufficiently charged;
- the difference between the interior temperature of the vehicle and the automatic air conditioning set point is too great;
- the "see clearly" function is activated (refer to the "air conditioning" section in chapter 3);
- the engine coolant temperature is too low;
- the automatic particulate filter cleaning is in progress;
or
- ...
The "AUTOSTOP unavailable" message on the instrument panel warns you that engine stop is not available.
For refuelling, the engine must be stopped (not in standby): you must stop the engine by pressing the engine stop button (refer to the “Starting, stopping the engine” section).Special cases
- Depending on the vehicle, with the system active and the engine stopped (traffic jam, stopped at a traffic light, etc.), if the driver gets out of the seat or unfastens the seat belt and opens the driver's door, the ignition is switched off.
To restart the engine and reactivate the Stop and Start system, press the start button (refer to the "Starting and stopping the engine" section).
- If the engine stalls while the system is active, fully press the clutch pedal to restart.
Deactivate the Stop and Start function before any work in the engine compartment.

Deactivating and activating the function
Press switch 1 to deactivate the function. The "Stop-Start deactivated" message appears on the instrument panel and indicator 2 built into the switch lights up.
Press again to reactivate the system.
The "Stop-Start activated" message appears on the instrument panel and indicator 2 built into switch 1 goes out.
The system reactivates automatically each time the vehicle is started deliberately by pressing the start button (refer to the "Starting and stopping the engine" section).
Note: with the engine in standby, pressing switch 1 restarts the engine automatically.
Before leaving the vehicle, switching off the ignition by pressing the engine stop button is mandatory (refer to the “Starting, stopping the engine” section)Operating faults
When the "Stop and start to be checked" message appears on the instrument panel, together with indicator 2 built into switch 1 lighting up, the system is deactivated.
Consult a Renault dealer.
In case of emergency stop, the engine can restart by pressing the clutch pedal if the Stop and Start function is activated.
