Removal

  • · Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • · Disconnect the battery and remove the battery tray.
  • · Remove the engine compartment fuse box mounting bolts and move the fuse box aside, taking care not to stretch the wiring.
  • · Remove the air cleaner assembly and the air intake hose.
  • · On vehicles equipped with ABS, remove the ABS modulator.
  • · Remove the A/T fluid level gauge.
  • · Remove the retaining bolt and the dipstick tube.
  • · Turn the throttle valve drive segment so that the throttle valve is fully open, and disconnect the kickdown cable. Loosen the lock nut and remove the outer cable sheath from the bracket.
  • · Chock the rear wheels, raise the front of the vehicle with a jack and support it on stands. Remove the front wheels.
  • · Remove the screws and the engine undercover splash shields.
  • · Attach the slings of the electric hoist to the engine lifting eyes and raise the hoist so that the mounts are relieved of the powertrain weight.
  • · On the left side of the A/T, remove the transmission-to-support bracket bolts.
  • · Disconnect the ground strap from the A/T.
  • · Release the kickdown cable from the clip.
  • · Remove the drive shafts.
  • · Remove the exhaust inlet pipe and the center section (resonator) of the muffler.
  • · Disconnect the steering column universal joint from the steering rack pinion gear.
  • · Place a suitable container under the power steering pump assembly and remove the pressure and return line fittings. Allow the fluid to drain completely, then plug the openings in the power steering housing and the ends of the hoses to prevent dirt from entering the system.
  • · Remove the bolts securing the power steering hose and tube brackets.
  • · Remove the front subframe.
  • · Disconnect the solenoid, speedometer and starter interlock switch connectors from the A/T.
  • · Disconnect the selector cable from the transmission lever.
  • · Place a fluid collection container under the A/T cooler hoses. Loosen the clamps and remove the hoses from the A/T.
  • · Remove the starter motor.
  • · Remove the mounting bolts and the transmission-to-engine mounting plate.
  • · Remove the 6 torque converter-to-drive plate bolts, turning the crankshaft as necessary to access the bolts.
  • · Support the A/T from below with a floor jack on a dolly, placing a wooden block between the jack and the A/T. · Remove the A/T case mounting bolts.
  • · Remove the remaining A/T mounting bolts (their number and location depend on the vehicle model).
  • · Carefully separate the A/T from the engine, then lower it with the jack and remove it from under the vehicle. After separating the A/T, make sure the torque converter does not fall out of the A/T.
  • · As soon as possible, bolt a metal plate to the end of the A/T to prevent the torque converter from falling out of the A/T.
