Catalytic Converter
To reduce emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, all vehicles covered in this manual are equipped with a single-bed catalytic converter which, through oxidation-reduction reactions, breaks down these three components, converting them into harmless nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water.
The catalytic converter is mounted in the exhaust system; its mounting is almost the same as that of the muffler.
Inspection
PROCEDURE
1. Periodically check the condition of the flange connections of the catalytic converter to the exhaust pipe. Make sure the bolts are tight and there are no exhaust gas leaks at the joint.

2. Before loosening the catalytic converter mounting bolts (indicated by arrows), be sure to apply penetrating fluid to them.

3. Check the catalytic converter heat shield for damage. If the shield has dents or deformations that cause it to contact the converter body, repair or replace the heat shield.

4. Check the heat insulating shield (1) for damage. Make sure there is the required clearance between the shield and the catalytic converter.
Replacement
The replacement procedure is described in subsection 5.13.
