GENERAL INFORMATION
Before Starting the Engine
PROCEDURE
1. Inspect the area around the vehicle.
2. Get in, adjust the seat position, head restraint and steering wheel angle.
3. Adjust the rearview mirrors.
4. Close all doors.
5. Fasten your seat belt.
Before Engaging the Starter
PROCEDURE
1. Apply the parking brake. Switch off all unnecessary electrical loads and lighting.
2. On vehicles with a manual transmission, depress the clutch pedal fully and place the shift lever in neutral. Keep the pedal depressed until the engine starts.
3. On vehicles with an automatic transmission, move the selector lever to the P position. If it is necessary to restart a stalled engine while driving, move the lever to the N position. If the lever is in any drive position, the safety device will prevent the starter from operating.
4. On vehicles with an automatic transmission only, depress the brake pedal fully and keep it depressed until the vehicle begins to move.
Engine Starting
* The starter must not be operated for more than 15 s during cranking. Otherwise, the starter and cables will overheat.
* Do not accelerate sharply when the engine is cold.
If the engine often stalls or starts with difficulty, check the engine condition immediately.
MODEL 2E
PROCEDURE
1. Perform the instructions described above.
Starting under normal conditions, engine cold
2. Depress the accelerator pedal fully and release it. This activates the idle-up system and the automatic starting device.
3. Remove your foot from the accelerator pedal and operate the starter by turning the ignition key to the START position. Release the key after the engine starts.
4. Let the engine warm up for 10 s, after which the vehicle is ready to drive.
Starting at Negative Temperatures or After Several Days of Standing
5. Before operating the starter, depress the accelerator pedal fully and release it 2–3 times. This enriches the mixture for engine starting.
6. Remove your foot from the accelerator pedal and operate the starter by turning the ignition key to the START position. Release the key after the engine starts.
7. Let the engine run for 30 s, then quickly depress the accelerator pedal and reduce the idle speed.
8. Let the engine warm up for several minutes, after which the vehicle is ready to drive.
Starting a Warm Engine
9. Depress the accelerator pedal approximately halfway and operate the starter by turning the ignition key to the START position. Release the key and the accelerator pedal after the engine starts.
Starting a Hot Engine
10. Depress the accelerator pedal fully and operate the starter by turning the ignition key to the START position. Release the key and the accelerator pedal after the engine starts. Do not depress the pedal again.
Restarting a Stalled Engine
11. Repeat the actions described above depending on the engine temperature.
Engine Fails to Start
12. Refer to the description in Subsection 1.6.5.
MODEL 4E-FE, 4A-FE AND 7A-FE (FOR VEHICLES SOLD IN GERMANY)
The vehicles are equipped with a multi-port direct fuel injection system (sequential injection), which automatically prepares the mixture required for engine starting. Regardless of the engine temperature, the engine is started as follows.
PROCEDURE
1. Perform the instructions described above.
Starting under normal conditions
2. Remove your foot from the accelerator pedal and operate the starter by turning the ignition key to the START position. Release the key after the engine starts.
3. Warm up the engine only while driving, not at idle. Drive at moderate speed until the coolant temperature rises to the operating level.
4. If the engine stalls, restart it by repeating the normal starting procedure.
If the engine fails to start
5. Refer to the description in Subsection 1.6.5.
