Removal SEQUENCE OF OPERATIONS 1. Disconnect the lead from the negative battery terminal. 2. Place wedges under the rear wheels. 3. Loosen the wheel bolts. 4. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on stands. 5. Remove the wheels. 6. Measure the length of thread of outer ball joint 15 protruding from under nut 1 and record it (see fig. Steering Gear). 7. Unscrew nut 1 of outer ball joint 15. 8. Press outer ball joint 15 out of the tie rod. 9. Remove clamp 5 from boot 6. 10. Pull boot 6 off flange 24 of the steering gear housing and slide it back. 11. Loosen lock nut 7 and mark the position of the end of inner joint 4 on the thread of rack 8 with paint. 12. Unscrew inner ball joint 4 and remove tie rod 2 or 13. 13. Remove boot 6 and clamp 5 from the tie rod. Installation Warning Damaged tie rods cannot be repaired and must be replaced. SEQUENCE OF OPERATIONS 1. Adjust the length of right tie rod 13 using tie rod end 16, loosening lock nut 14. The length of right tie rod 13 must be 379 mm (381 mm for automatic transmission). Tighten lock nut 14 to 35 N·m. 2. The left tie rod, installed at the factory, is not adjustable. When replacing, install an adjustable tie rod and set its length to match the old non-adjustable rod. 3. Tighten the lock nut of the new tie rod to 35 N·m. 4. Position the rack so that both of its ends protrude from the housing by equal distances. 5. Inspect boot 6 carefully and replace it at the slightest damage. 6. Fit new clamp 5 and boot 6 onto the tie rod. 7. Screw inner ball joint 4 in to the mark made earlier on the thread of rack 8, or to distance a = 70.5 mm (see fig. Steering Gear). 8. Tighten the lock nut to 35 N·m. 9. Press outer ball joint 15 into the steering knuckle arm.

Warning Each time a tie rod is installed, a new nut 1 for the outer ball joint must be used. 10. Screw on nut 1 to the length measured earlier and tighten to 35 N·m. 11. Fit boot 6 onto flange 24 of the steering gear housing, and insert its other end into the slot of rubber bushing 3. 12. Install clamp 5 on boot 6. 13. Adjust front wheel toe-in (see subsection 9.1.7).
