Clutch and Clutch Actuating Mechanism
– driven plate;
– pressure plate;
– release bearing;
– clutch release lever;
– release bearing guide sleeve;
– clutch slave cylinder;
– clutch master cylinder;
– clutch pedal.

The force applied when pressing the clutch pedal must be transmitted to the release bearing. On the Audi 80 this is done hydraulically, as in the brake system. When the clutch pedal is pressed, the piston in the master cylinder (at the clutch pedal) pushes a certain amount of fluid to the slave cylinder (at the transmission). There, the piston extends slightly from the cylinder and, through the clutch release lever, moves the release bearing.
