Checking the Clutch Hydraulic Actuation
PROCEDURE
If the clutch disengages properly, the clutch hydraulic actuation is also in order.
If the clutch disengages poorly or the pedal goes down without resistance, air has entered the hydraulic system. Simply bleeding the air will not help in this case. Locate and repair the leak first. Only then bleed the air from the system. Other causes of incorrect clutch disengagement are listed in the troubleshooting table at the end of the chapter.
To check the clutch hydraulic actuation as a precaution, look for brake fluid leaks at the clutch master cylinder (top of the clutch pedal) and at the slave cylinder (near the gearbox).
Clutch cylinders wet with oil are leaking and must be replaced. However, without thorough cleaning of the area around the slave cylinder, the source of the oil stain will be difficult to determine.
Note: the clutch hydraulic system is also supplied with fluid from the brake fluid reservoir. However, a leak in the clutch hydraulics does not endanger the brake system. The clutch hydraulic pick-up port is located relatively high in the reservoir, so there is always enough fluid left for the brakes to operate.
