Clutch Service Life

~1min read

As already mentioned in the Operating Principle subsection, each clutch engagement causes the friction linings of the driven plate to rub against the mating friction surfaces, generating heat. Wear is particularly accelerated by starting off at high engine speed (so-called "hard start"), starting off in second gear, "cheating" at intersections in second or third gear with the clutch pedal partially depressed, or "balancing" on an incline.
