Checking the Turn Signals and Hazard Warning Lights
Constant Check
The hazard warning lights must always be ready for operation, so their switch is supplied through a fuse directly from the battery positive terminal. The turn signals, in contrast, receive power from terminal 15 only when the ignition is on.
PROCEDURE
With the ignition off, press the hazard warning light switch on the instrument panel.
All four turn signals, the indicator lamp in the hazard switch, and both turn signal indicators must start flashing at the same rhythm.
Switch off the hazard warning lights, then switch the ignition on.
When the turn signal lever is operated, the turn signal lights on the selected side and the green turn signal indicator corresponding to the selected direction must flash regularly.
Turn Signal Malfunctions
If the green indicator flashes at a rapid rate when the turn signals are on, one of the incandescent bulbs has burned out. If one of the hazard warning lamp bulbs fails, this does not affect the flash rate. For bulb replacement, refer to the Lighting section.
If the turn signal or hazard warning indicators remain on constantly when the turn signals or hazard warning lights are activated, the turn signal relay is faulty. Refer to the following text.
If the turn signals flash slowly and then quickly, and all connector terminals, including the ground wire, are in good condition, the relay must be replaced.
If only the hazard warning lights work but not the turn signals, or vice versa, power is not reaching the corresponding fuse (refer to the fuse tables in the Body Electrical System section) or the corresponding switch is faulty (for removal, refer to the Instruments and Auxiliary Devices section).
Removing the Turn Signal Flasher
On the Audi 80, the turn signal relay is not located in the central junction box but is attached by a bracket to the lower left side of the instrument panel. This is so that the characteristic clicking sound can be heard clearly. Removal is described below.
PROCEDURE
Remove the lower left panel under the instrument panel.
Reach under the edge of the instrument panel, locate and pull out the relay with the connected wires.
Disconnect the multi-pin connector.
Removing the Turn Signal Relay

The turn signal relay (2) is attached by a bracket (1) to the lower left side under the instrument panel.
Driving with a faulty turn signal is not entirely safe, since in heavy traffic, and especially in the dark, other road users will not clearly see your intention to turn. In this case:
PROCEDURE
Remove the turn signal relay (see previous section) and disconnect the connector.
Install a jumper wire between terminals 49 and 49a.
To do this, wrap a paper clip or short piece of wire around the named connector tabs on the relay and reinsert it.
With the turn signal lever depressed, the lamps will now remain on constantly.
By switching them on and off with the lever, you can achieve a rhythmic flashing.
