Air Conditioner

~16min read

Applies to vehicles: with air conditioning

Description

Regardless of the season, the air conditioning automatically keeps the selected cabin temperature at a constant level.

We recommend the following setting:

  • Set the temperature to 22 °C.
  • Press the [AUTO] button =>, fig. 128.

The setting above will quickly achieve a comfortable cabin temperature. It should only be changed if personal comfort or special circumstances really require it.

Air conditioning is a combination of an automatic ventilation/heating system and a cooling system that dehumidifies and cools the air in the cabin.

The air conditioning keeps the selected temperature at a constant level, fully automatically. To do this, it automatically adjusts the temperature of the air delivered by the vents, the blower speed (air volume) and the air distribution in the cabin. Even solar radiation is taken into account by the system, so manual adjustment is not necessary. Regardless of the season, the automatic mode => of the air conditioning meets all the requirements for the comfort of the vehicle occupants.

Please note the following:

The cooling mode reduces the humidity of the air in the cabin.

This largely prevents the windows from fogging up.

When the ambient humidity and outside temperatures are high, a puddle of water from condensation from the air conditioning condenser may form under the vehicle. This is completely normal and is not a sign of a leak.

When the outside temperature is low, the blower only switches to a higher speed (except in defrost mode) once the coolant has reached a sufficient temperature.

When you accelerate at full throttle, the air conditioning compressor is temporarily switched off so that the engine's full output is available.

To ensure engine cooling under heavy load, the compressor switches off when the coolant temperature becomes too high.

Pollen and dust filter

The pollen and dust filter (activated charcoal particle filter) significantly reduces/retains impurities in the outside air (such as dust, pollen, etc.).

The filter cartridge must be replaced at the intervals specified in the Service Schedule so that the efficiency of the air conditioning is not impaired.

If the filter's efficiency drops prematurely due to driving in areas with a high concentration of pollutants, the filter element must be replaced between the service intervals specified in the Service Schedule.

Warning!

  • If you suspect the air conditioning has been damaged, immediately select ECON mode and have the air conditioning checked by a specialist workshop to prevent further damage.
  • Repair work on the air conditioning requires special knowledge and special tools. If faults occur, contact a specialist workshop.

Note

  • To avoid reducing the heating or cooling performance and to prevent the windows from fogging up, make sure that the air intake vents in front of the windshield are always free of ice, snow and tree leaves.
  • Air from the air vents is expelled into the cabin through the air outlets in the luggage compartment side trim, below the rear side windows.

Make sure the air outlets are never covered by clothing or other objects.

  • The air conditioning works optimally when the windows and the sunroof/tilt-sliding roof* are closed. If the interior has been extremely heated because the vehicle was parked in full sun, you can speed up cooling by opening the windows briefly.

Automatic operating mode (AUTO)

Standard operating mode for all seasons

Activating automatic mode

  • Set the temperature between +18 °C.
  • Press the (AUTO) button => , fig. 128.

Automatic mode keeps the temperature in the interior at a constant level and dehumidifies the air inside the vehicle. Temperature, airflow and air distribution are adjusted automatically so that the desired temperature is reached as quickly as possible or is maintained at a constant level. Changes in outside temperature and the effects of sunlight on the interior temperature are compensated automatically.

This mode only works within the temperature setting range between +18 °C and +29 °C. If you select a temperature below +18 °C, the letters LO are displayed. If the selected temperature is above +29 °C, the letters HI are displayed. In these two extreme settings, the temperature is no longer regulated automatically. The system always operates at maximum heating or cooling output.

Note

If you press and hold the [AUTO] button on the driver's side, you can adjust the passenger side temperature to match the driver's side temperature and vice versa. The new selected temperature is displayed.

Adjusting the temperature

The interior temperature can be set individually for the driver's and front passenger's sides.

  • Press the Q or Q button below the display => , fig. 128 until the desired temperature is reached on the driver's or front passenger's side.

The selected temperature is shown above the buttons.

If you press and hold the [AUTO] button on the driver's side, you can adjust the passenger side temperature to match the driver's side temperature and vice versa. The new selected temperature is displayed. The previously selected temperature can be restored when the driver or front passenger sets the temperature again on their own display.

Defrost

This operating mode quickly defrosts or defogs the windshield and side windows.

Press the button=> , fig. 128
to activate this operating mode.

Press the switch againor
press the (AUTO) button to deactivate this operating mode.

Temperature control is automatic. The maximum airflow is delivered mainly through vents 1 and 2.

Press the ® button to deactivate recirculation mode and ECON mode.

Manual airflow mode

Recirculation mode largely prevents polluted outside air from entering the interior.

Activating recirculation mode

  • Press the button () =>,
    fig. 128

Deactivating recirculation mode

Press the switch againor

Press the [AUTO] button or

Press the button

In recirculation mode, air is drawn from the interior and recirculated. We recommend using recirculation mode in the following cases:

  • When driving through a tunnel or in a traffic jam, to prevent surrounding odours from entering the interior.

CAUTION!

However, do not use this mode for too long, as fresh air does not enter the interior and the windows may fog up when the cooling system is switched off - Risk of accident!

[ECON] operating mode

ECON mode saves fuel.

  • Press the [ECON] button, fig. 128 to activate this operating mode.
  • Press the [ECON] button again or the [AUTO] button to deactivate this operating mode.

In ECON mode, the cooling system is switched off; the heating and ventilation system is controlled automatically.

"ECON" stands for "Economy". To save fuel, you can switch off the cooling system (compressor).

Please note that in ECON mode, the interior temperature cannot be lower than the outside temperature.

The air will be neither cooled nor dehumidified. The windows may therefore fog up.

If you select ECON mode on a vehicle with a diesel engine, the auxiliary heater will be switched off, which saves fuel.

Note

If the indicator light built into the control remains lit and you have deactivated ECON mode (= air conditioning switched on), the air conditioning may be faulty. Contact a specialist workshop if there is a malfunction.

Automatic airflow mode

An air quality sensor detects high concentrations of pollutants in the outside air from petrol and diesel engine exhaust gases and automatically switches to air recirculation mode.

Deactivating recirculation mode

  • Press the switch againor

  • Press the [AUTO] button or
  • Press the button

The automatic air recirculation mode should always be activated.

The automatic air recirculation mode is activated approx. 30 seconds after switching on the ignition or after starting the engine. During initialization, only fresh air enters the vehicle interior.

If the air conditioning air quality sensor detects polluted air from outside, the sensor decides whether the standard pollutant filter can reduce the impurities in the air or whether it must activate air recirculation mode. When the concentration of pollutants is high, the air conditioning automatically switches to air recirculation mode and shuts off the supply of outside air. As soon as the concentration of pollutants in the outside air decreases, fresh air is once again directed into the vehicle interior.

The automatic air recirculation mode is limited to a maximum of 12 minutes. If the windows fog up during air recirculation mode, immediately press the button.

Under certain operating conditions (e.g. when the operating modeor
is selected), automatic air recirculation
is deactivated. In "ECON" position and at temperatures below approx. -8 °C, automatic air recirculation mode is limited to 12 minutes.

Changing the temperature unit of measurement

The temperature can be displayed in °C or °F.

  • To switch the temperature display from °C to °F, press and hold the air recirculation buttonand briefly press the

You can reduce or increase the blower speed selected by the automatic system.

  • Press the buttonor
located in the centre of the control area,
fig. 128 to select the desired blower speed (air volume).

The air conditioning automatically adjusts the blower speed according to the temperature in the vehicle interior. However, you can adjust the air flow manually. The selected blower speed is shown on the central display above the buttons by a row of bars.

Air distribution

You can change the automatic air distribution.

You can operate the buttons,
and
separately or in combination. To
return air distribution to automatic, you can either deactivate the selected functions individually or press the (AUTO) button.

The three buttons allow the settings listed below.

The numbers refer to the air vents, fig. 130.

Air flow towards the windows

The total air flow exits through vents 1 and 2. Unlike the operating modethe air flow is not changed.

Air flow towards driver/front passenger

The entire air flow is delivered through the dashboard vents 3 and 4 and the rear vents in the centre console.

Air flow towards the floor

The majority of the air is directed to vents 5 and the vents located under the front seats. A certain amount of air also exits through vents 3 and 4.

Note

All the setting positions indicated for air distribution ensure that a small amount of air is always available at the other vents.

Air vents

The air vents => fig. 130 (3) and (4) function as follows:

Vents (3) and (4)

  • To open and close these vents, turn the corresponding side wheel.
  • Move the lever in the centre of the grille in the desired direction to adjust the air flow from the vents. The air flow direction can be adjusted horizontally and vertically.

Depending on the selected operating mode, the air vents are controlled manually or automatically. The vents deliver heated or unheated fresh air, or cooled air.

The air vents for heating the rear floor area are located under the front seats. They are controlled together with vents (5).

Note

When the air conditioning operates in cooling mode, air exits mainly from vents (3) and (4). To ensure sufficient cooling, never fully close vents (3) and (4).

Efficient use of the air conditioning

Efficient use of the air conditioning saves fuel.

When the air conditioner is operating in cooling mode, engine power is reduced and fuel consumption increases. To keep the operating time as short as possible, observe the following:

  • If you want to save fuel, select ECON mode.
  • If you open the side windows or the sunroof* while driving, select ECON mode.
  • If the interior has been heated up considerably by the sun, open the doors and windows for a short time.

Environment

Fuel economy means reducing the harmful emissions of the vehicle.

Key coding

When you switch on the ignition, the air conditioner setting assigned to your key will be restored automatically.

For greater comfort, the current air conditioner settings are stored automatically and assigned to the key in use. When you start the engine, the setting assigned to your key is restored automatically. The air conditioner therefore adapts automatically to the preferred settings of each driver who uses their own key, without having to readjust it every time.

Note

If another driver uses your key and changes the air conditioner settings, your preferred settings will be lost.

Blower/solar roof

When solar radiation is sufficiently strong, the blower continues to run after the ignition is switched off to supply fresh air to the interior.

The blower motor is powered by solar power from the solar roof when you switch off the ignition.

Make sure that vents 3 and 4 are open, fig. 130, for optimum ventilation.

Ventilation only works when the sunroof is closed or tilted up.

If you park the vehicle while air recirculation mode is active, the air conditioner automatically switches to fresh air mode.
