Removing and Installing Injectors
New injectors are treated with preservative. After 5 minutes of operation they are flushed with fuel. Do not store injectors unused for long periods, as they will rust.
REMOVAL
1. Remove the cover from the oil filler neck. Remove the small covers (arrows in the accompanying illustration) with a screwdriver and unscrew the bolts beneath them. Remove the two plastic trim covers.

2. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connectors. Disconnect the VANOS solenoid valve connector. Refer to the accompanying illustration.

3. Remove the injector connector strip and move it aside.
* Risk of fire. Do not smoke. The fuel system is under pressure. Collect spilled fuel with a rag.
4. Disconnect the fuel supply hose (1) first, then the return hose (2), from the fuel rail. Refer to the accompanying illustration. To do this, open the clamps. Replace the clamps with new ones during installation.
* On some models the supply hose is connected directly to the fuel rail. In this case, replace the O-ring with a new one during installation.

5. On some versions the fuel hoses are secured with clips. In this case, special tool BMW 16 1 050 or an equivalent is required to remove the clips. Before installation, check the O-ring. If it is damaged, replace it. Refer to the accompanying illustration.

6. Remove the mounting bolts (arrows in the accompanying illustration) of the fuel rail.

7. Disconnect the vacuum hose (1) from the pressure regulator. (2 - fuel connection, 3 - mounting point). Refer to the accompanying illustration.

8. Lift the fuel rail together with the injectors out of the cylinder head. The injectors are only inserted and can be removed freely.
9. Remove the retaining clips (4) on the side and remove the injectors.

INSTALLATION
1. Insert the injectors into the fuel rail and secure with clips.
2. Lubricate the O-rings (1) with petroleum jelly or SAE 90 gear oil. Refer to the accompanying illustration.
3. Evenly insert the injectors with the fuel rail into the cylinder head.
* When installing the injectors, take care not to damage the O-rings (1). Replace any damaged rings. Pay attention to the position of ring (2). Lubricate the O-rings with petroleum jelly or gear oil before installation.

4. Secure the fuel rail to the cylinder head with two bolts.
5. Install the fuel supply and return hoses on the fuel rail. Secure with new clamps, refer to the “Removal” subsection.
6. Connect the oxygen sensor connectors and the VANOS solenoid valve connector.
7. Secure the injector connector strip.
8. Install the two engine covers. Screw the caps onto the oil filler necks.
9. Read the fault memory of the DME control unit. After rectifying faults, clear the memory.
