GENERAL INFORMATION.

1. Check the operation of the overrunning clutch. The starter pinion should rotate freely in one

direction and lock to the motor shaft when an attempt is made to turn it in the opposite direction. Check the condition of the pinion: the teeth must not have cracks, spalling or heavy wear. If defects are found, replace the overrunning clutch and the pinion. Contact damage to the pinion may also be a sign of

spalling of the flywheel ring gear teeth. Check the condition of the flywheel ring gear and replace it if necessary.

2. Check the overrunning clutch torque. To do this, without removing the overrunning clutch from the shaft, clamp the motor armature in a vise. To prevent damage

wrap the armature with cloth. Fit the torque wrench socket onto the overrunning clutch and

apply a torque of 68 N·m counterclockwise. The overrunning clutch must not rotate. If it rotates, replace it.

3. The roller overrunning clutch does not require lubrication during operation. However, keep it clean. Do not use cleaning agents that may

dissolve and wash out the grease from the overrunning clutch. For lubricating the armature shaft journal on

which the overrunning clutch is installed, use silicone grease General Electric CG321,

Dow Corning 33 Medium or other equivalent greases.

4. Do not over-lubricate the overrunning clutch components.
