Transmission Overview

The Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (eCVT) consists of the following internal components:

  • Traction Motor
  • Generator/Starter
  • High Voltage Terminals
  • Pump and Filter Assembly
  • Park Lock Actuator
  • TFT Sensor
  • Planet Carrier
  • Differential Case
  • High Voltage Inductor

Item Description
1 Traction Motor
2 Generator/Starter
3 High Voltage Terminals
4 Pump and Filter Assembly
5 Park Lock Actuator
6 Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor
7 Planet Carrier
8 Differential Case

When the transmission range is in the PARK position, the parking pawl locks the final drive to the transmission case and the vehicle cannot move. The vehicle can be switched on and the READY indicator illuminates to show that the shift lever can be moved out of PARK and the vehicle can be driven.

When the transmission range is in the REVERSE position, the ISC (Inverter System Controller) changes the polarity of the field coil, which reverses the direction of the traction motor to move the vehicle in reverse.

When the transmission range is in the NEUTRAL position, the traction motor does not supply power to or hold the final drive, and the final drive can rotate freely.

When the transmission range is in the DRIVE position, the ISC supplies high-voltage current to the traction motor to transmit torque to the final drive to propel the vehicle.

When the transmission range is in the LOW position, the transmission increases regenerative braking when the accelerator pedal is released to provide engine-braking feel and increased battery charging.
