Symptom Chart

The diagnosis in this manual assumes a certain level of skill and knowledge of Ford-approved diagnostic procedures.
REFER TO: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).

In most cases, the Inverter System Controller (ISC) sets a DTC to assist in diagnosis. Before using the Symptom Chart,
REFER TO: Automatic Transmission (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission - HF45, Diagnosis and Testing).
. The Condition column lists the vehicle condition. The Action column refers to the diagnostic test. Each diagnostic test lists the possible symptoms and the components that may cause each symptom. Components are listed in order of disassembly. Use the component list and required actions to identify the root cause of the concern.

Condition Action
Chatter - occurs at idle or with slight acceleration from a stop GO to Pinpoint Test A
Whine - pitch increases with vehicle speed GO to Pinpoint Test B
Knock - occurs when shifting from PARK to DRIVE or REVERSE GO to Pinpoint Test C
Bump - occurs when shifting from PARK to DRIVE or REVERSE. Similar to clunk, but without noise GO to Pinpoint Test D
Moan, drone and/or vehicle shudder during moderate acceleration and/or during regenerative braking GO to Pinpoint Test E
Howling noise during acceleration and deceleration with engine on or off GO to Pinpoint Test F
Driveline hum type noise - ANC GO to Pinpoint Test G

Pinpoint Tests

DIAGNOSTIC TEST A: CLUNK - OCCURS AT IDLE OR WITH SLIGHT ACCELERATION FROM A STOP

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

  • Damaged transmission roll restrictor or transmission mount isolators.
    • CHECK the transmission mount isolators for damage. REFER TO: RH Roll Restrictor (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission - HF45, Removal and Installation).
or REFER TO: Transmission Mount Isolator (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission - HF45, Removal and Installation).
  • Powertrain mounts incorrectly installed or binding.
    • PERFORM the powertrain/transmission mount neutralization procedure. REFER TO: Transmission Mount/Powertrain Neutralization (303-00 Engine System - General Information, General Procedures).
  • Loose fender splash shield
    • CHECK for loose fasteners. Tighten to specification.

Possible Sources

  • Roll restrictor
  • Transmission mount isolator
  • Fender splash shield
Diagnostic steps are not provided for this symptom or diagnostic trouble code. REFER TO: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
DIAGNOSTIC TEST B: WHINE - PITCH INCREASES WITH VEHICLE SPEED

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

  • Incorrect transmission fluid level
    • CHECK that the transmission is filled to the correct level. REFER TO: Transmission Fluid Level Check (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission - HF45, General Procedures).
  • Steering column boot or wire harness grommets incorrectly installed.
    • CHECK the steering column boot and wire harness grommet for correct installation.
  • Powertrain mounts incorrectly installed or binding.
    • PERFORM the powertrain/transmission mount neutralization procedure. REFER TO: Transmission Mount/Powertrain Neutralization (303-00 Engine System - General Information, General Procedures).

Possible Sources

  • Transmission fluid level
Diagnostic steps are not provided for this symptom or diagnostic trouble code. REFER TO: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
DIAGNOSTIC TEST C: KNOCK - OCCURS WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK TO DRIVE OR REVERSE

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

  • Damaged transmission mounts
    • CHECK the transmission mount isolators for damage. REFER TO: RH Roll Restrictor (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission - HF45, Removal and Installation).
or REFER TO: Transmission Mount Isolator (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission - HF45, Removal and Installation).
  • Powertrain mounts incorrectly installed or binding.
    • PERFORM the powertrain/transmission mount neutralization procedure. REFER TO: Transmission Mount/Powertrain Neutralization (303-00 Engine System - General Information, General Procedures).

Possible Sources

  • Roll restrictor
  • Transmission mount isolator
Diagnostic steps are not provided for this symptom or diagnostic trouble code. REFER TO: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
DIAGNOSTIC TEST D: BUMP - OCCURS WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK TO DRIVE OR REVERSE. SIMILAR TO CLUNK, BUT WITHOUT NOISE

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

  • Initial gear engagement
    • Acceptable condition.

Possible Sources

  • Internal transmission components
Diagnostic steps are not provided for this symptom or diagnostic trouble code. REFER TO: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
DIAGNOSTIC TEST E: MOAN, DRONE AND/OR VEHICLE SHUDDER DURING MODERATE ACCELERATION AND/OR DURING REGENERATIVE BRAKING

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

  • Transmission mount bracket grounded to vehicle or damaged roll restrictor
    • Inspect the mount for an additional bolt that may be positioned inside the mount. Inspect the mount for damaged/torn rubber.
    • If nothing is found visually, remove the mounts to check for evidence of rubbing on the vehicle body. REFER TO: Transmission Mount Isolator (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission - HF45, Removal and Installation).
    • Inspect the roll restrictor for worn or damaged bushings. REFER TO: RH Roll Restrictor (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission - HF45, Removal and Installation).
  • Powertrain mounts incorrectly installed or binding.
    • PERFORM the powertrain/transmission mount neutralization procedure. REFER TO: Transmission Mount/Powertrain Neutralization (303-00 Engine System - General Information, General Procedures).

Possible Sources

  • Roll restrictor
  • Transmission mount isolator
Diagnostic steps are not provided for this symptom or diagnostic trouble code. REFER TO: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
DIAGNOSTIC TEST F: HOWLING NOISE DURING ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION WITH ENGINE ON OR OFF

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

  • Normal operation
    • Evaluate the customer vehicle with a similar vehicle to determine if the noise is caused by normal operation. Both vehicles must be at normal operating temperature to compare NVH response.
  • Transmission mount not neutralized
    • REFER TO: Powertrain/Transmission Mount Neutralization (303-00 Engine System - General Information, General Procedures).
