Lubrication System

~1min read

The lubrication system consists of the oil pan, oil pump, oil filter and various oil passages. The oil pump is driven by the crankshaft. The relief valve in the oil pump maintains the engine oil pressure at a specified level. If the pressure exceeds this level, the relief valve opens and part of the oil returns to the oil pan.

The filter has a bypass valve through which unfiltered oil flows directly into the oil gallery if the filter becomes severely clogged.
Oil cleaned by the oil filter flows into the main oil gallery.

The oil flow then divides into two streams. One stream is supplied to the main bearings of the crankshaft and, through drilled passages, lubricates the connecting rod bearings. To cool the pistons, oil is sprayed from nozzles onto the underside of the pistons.

The second stream of oil is routed through passages to the cylinder head to lubricate the camshaft bearings and hydraulic lash adjusters.
After passing through the head and cylinder block, the oil drains back into the oil pan.
