Manual transmission
The transmission converts the torque transmitted from the engine in magnitude and direction. This is necessary to ensure optimal speed and traction of the vehicle, as well as the most economical engine operation and reverse driving. In addition, the transmission disconnects the engine and drivetrain when the vehicle is stopped and parked, and when coasting with the engine running.
The transmission components are housed in a case that is bolted to the rear of the engine.
Torque from the engine is transmitted through the clutch to the transmission input shaft. The transmission output shaft transmits torque through the differential to the drive shafts. Gear engagement is performed by moving the synchronizer sleeve, which rigidly connects the gear to the transmission shaft.
The transmission is a very complex assembly and its repair must be performed at a specialized workshop; therefore, this section covers only transmission removal and installation.
To remove the transmission, raise the vehicle and secure it in this position. A stationary jack is also required.
