Driving Your Vehicle

System Limitations

~5min read

The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system monitors the vehicle ahead on the road through camera recognition to warn the driver that a collision is imminent and, if necessary, apply emergency braking.

In certain situations, the camera may be unable to detect the vehicle ahead. In these cases, the FCA system may not operate correctly. The driver should pay careful attention to the following situations, in which FCA operation may be limited.

Vehicle Detection

The sensor may be limited when:

  • The camera is blocked by a foreign object or debris
  • Adverse weather, such as heavy rain or snow, obstructs the camera's field of view
  • There is electromagnetic wave interference
  • The vehicle is on a gravel or rough, uneven surface, or on a road with sudden changes in gradient
  • The vehicle is driven through a construction site, on a gravel road, or over metal materials such as railway tracks
  • The vehicle ahead is too small to be detected (e.g., a motorcycle, bicycle, etc.).
  • The camera field of view is poorly illuminated (either too dark, or excessive reflection or strong backlight obstructs the field of view).
  • The camera does not recognize the entire vehicle ahead.
  • The vehicle ahead is a large vehicle or trailer that is too large to be detected by the camera recognition system (e.g., a tractor trailer, etc.).
  • The vehicle ahead has no taillights, the taillights are not on, or the taillights are located unusually.
  • External brightness changes suddenly, such as when entering or exiting a tunnel.
  • The vehicle is driving underground or inside a building.
  • The vehicle is driving inside a building, such as an underground parking garage.
  • Adverse road conditions cause excessive vehicle vibration while driving.
  • You are on a roundabout and the vehicle ahead is circling.
  • The camera lens is contaminated by tinted, film-coated, or coated windshield, damaged glass, or foreign objects stuck to the glass (stickers, insects, etc.).
  • The camera is damaged.
  • External brightness is too low, for example, when headlights are not on at night or the vehicle is driving through a tunnel.
  • Light from a street lamp or an oncoming vehicle is reflected on a wet road surface, such as a puddle on the road.
  • The forward field of view is restricted by sun glare.
  • A shadow falls on the road from the median strip, trees, etc.
  • The vehicle passes through a toll gate.
  • The windshield is fogged; a clear view of the road is obstructed.
  • Camera sensor recognition is limited.
  • The rear of the vehicle ahead is not normally visible (e.g., the vehicle is rotating or has overturned).
  • Sensor recognition changes suddenly when driving over a speed bump.
  • The vehicle ahead is driving erratically.
  • The vehicle ahead is moving laterally across the direction of travel.
  • The vehicle ahead is stopped across the direction of travel.
  • The vehicle ahead is moving toward your vehicle or is reversing.
Hyundai Elantra. Limitations of the System

• Driving on curves

FCA operation may be limited when driving on a curved road.

In some cases, FCA may activate prematurely on a curved road.

In addition, in some cases the front camera recognition system may not detect a vehicle when driving on a curved road.

In these cases, the driver must maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

Hyundai Elantra. Limitations of the System

The FCA system may recognize a vehicle in an adjacent lane when driving on a curved road.

In this case, the system may warn the driver unnecessarily and apply the brakes.

Always pay attention to the road and driving conditions while driving. If necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

In addition, if necessary, depress the accelerator pedal to prevent the system from unnecessarily decelerating your vehicle.

Hyundai Elantra. Limitations of the System

• Driving on slopes

FCA performance is reduced when driving uphill or downhill. It may not recognize a vehicle ahead in the same lane. It may unnecessarily issue a warning message and warning signal, or it may not issue a warning message and warning signal at all.

When FCA suddenly recognizes a vehicle ahead while driving on a slope, you may experience sudden deceleration.

Always look ahead when driving uphill or downhill and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain distance.

Hyundai Elantra. Limitations of the System

• Lane changes

When a vehicle changes lanes in front of you, the FCA system may not detect the vehicle immediately, especially if it changes lanes abruptly. In this case, maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

Hyundai Elantra. Limitations of the System

When driving in stop-and-go traffic and a vehicle ahead changes lanes, the FCA system may not immediately detect the new vehicle in front of you. In this case, maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

Hyundai Elantra. Limitations of the System

• Detection of the vehicle ahead

If the vehicle ahead has a load extending rearward from the cab, or if the vehicle ahead has a high ground clearance, additional special attention is required. The FCA system may not be able to detect a load extending from the vehicle. In such cases, maintain a safe braking distance from the rearmost object and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain distance.

Information

In some cases, the FCA system may be canceled due to electromagnetic interference.

Information

This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules.

Operation is subject to the following two conditions:

1. This device must not cause harmful interference.

2. This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

WARNING

  • Do not use the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system when towing a vehicle. Using the FCA system while towing may adversely affect the safety of your vehicle or the tow vehicle.
  • Exercise extreme caution if the vehicle ahead has a load extending rearward from the cab, or when the vehicle ahead has a high ground clearance.
  • The FCA system is designed to detect and track a vehicle ahead in the roadway through camera recognition. It is not designed to detect pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, or small objects on wheels, such as luggage bags, shopping carts, or strollers.
  • Never attempt to test the operation of the FCA system. This may result in serious injury or death.
