Battery Visual Inspection (2)

1. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position and turn off all accessories.

2. Disconnect the cables from the battery terminals (disconnect the negative (-) cable first).

3. Remove the battery from the vehicle.

Use particular caution if the battery case has cracks or other sources of electrolyte leakage. Avoid contact of electrolyte with skin.

When removing the battery, always wear suitable rubber gloves (do not use household gloves).

4. Check the battery tray for corrosion caused by acid (electrolyte) leakage. If corrosion is present, wash the affected areas with a solution of clean warm water and baking soda. Clean the affected areas with a stiff wire brush and wipe with a cloth dampened in the baking soda solution.

5. Clean the top of the battery with the solution as described in step 4.

6. Check the battery case and cover for cracks. If cracks are found, replace the battery.

7. Clean the battery terminals with an appropriate special cleaner.

8. Clean the inside surface of the battery cable terminal clamps with an appropriate special tool. Replace damaged or worn battery cables and damaged clamps.

9. Install the battery in the vehicle.

10. Connect the cable clamps to the battery terminals and check that the ends of the clamps are flush with the ends of the battery terminals.

11. Securely tighten the cable clamp nut.

12. After tightening, apply a small amount of mineral grease to all connections.

Flammable and explosive gas is released from under the battery cover during charging.

Do not smoke or use an open flame near a battery that is being charged or has recently been charged. Do not disconnect live circuits near the terminals of a battery being charged.

A spark may occur between disconnected wires (at the open circuit) and cause an explosion.

Keep flammable materials away from the open battery.
