Freeing the Vehicle

~1min read

If it is necessary to free the vehicle from snow, sand or mud, first turn the steering wheel left and right to clear the area around the front wheels.

Then, shift back and forth between 1st and R (Reverse, for manual transmission vehicles) or R (Reverse) and a forward gear (for automatic transmission vehicles). Do not over-accelerate the engine and spin the tires as little as possible.

To avoid transmission wear, wait until the wheels stop turning before changing gears.

Release the accelerator pedal while changing gears, and lightly press the accelerator pedal while the transmission is engaged.

Slowly turning the wheels forward and backward creates a rocking motion that may free the vehicle.

WARNING If tires spin at high speed, they may explode and people may be injured. Do not attempt this procedure if people or objects are near the vehicle. The vehicle may overheat due to an engine compartment fire or other damage. Spin the wheels as little as possible and avoid spinning them at speeds over 56 km/h as shown on the speedometer. NOTICE If the vehicle is still stuck after several attempts at rocking it free, have another vehicle tow it to avoid engine overheating and possible clutch damage. Refer to "Towing" in section 6. To avoid transmission damage, turn OFF the ESC (if equipped) before freeing the vehicle.
