Driving Your Vehicle

Winter Precautions

~3min read

Use High-Quality Ethylene Glycol Coolant

Your vehicle is delivered with high-quality ethylene glycol-based engine coolant. This is the only type of coolant that should be used, because it helps prevent corrosion in the cooling system, lubricates the water pump, and prevents freezing. Be sure to replace or add coolant according to the maintenance schedule. Before winter, have the coolant checked to make sure its freezing point is sufficient for the temperatures expected during winter.

Check the Battery and Cables

Winter temperatures affect battery performance. Inspect the battery and cables as described in Chapter 7. The battery charge level can be checked at an authorized HYUNDAI repair center or service station.

Change to "Winter" Oil if Necessary

In some regions, a lower-viscosity "winter weight" oil is recommended in winter. For more information, see Chapter 8. If you are not sure of the type of winter oil, consult an authorized HYUNDAI service center.

Check the Spark Plugs and Ignition System

Inspect the spark plugs as described in Chapter 7. Replace them if necessary. Also check all ignition wiring and components for cracks, wear, and damage.

To Prevent Door Locks from Freezing

To keep locks from freezing, apply a lock de-icer fluid or glycerin into the keyholes. When the keyhole is already blocked by ice, apply an approved de-icing spray to remove it. If the inside of the lock freezes, try to thaw it with a heated key. Use a heated key carefully to avoid injury.

Use an approved windshield washer antifreeze solution in the system

To prevent the windshield washer from freezing, add an approved windshield washer antifreeze solution as indicated on the washer fluid reservoir. Antifreeze washer fluid is available from an authorized HYUNDAI repairer, and most vehicles have additional outlets. Do not use engine coolant or other types of antifreeze solution, to prevent damage to vehicle paint.

Do not allow the parking brake to freeze

Under some conditions, your parking brake may freeze in the applied position. This is most likely to happen when snow or ice accumulates around or near the rear brakes, or if the brakes are wet. When there is a risk that your parking brake may freeze, temporarily apply it with the shift lever in P (Park). Also block the rear wheels in advance so the vehicle does not roll. Then release the parking brake.

Do not allow ice and snow to accumulate under

Under some conditions, snow and ice may build up under the fenders and interfere with steering. When driving in such conditions during severe winter, you should check under the vehicle on a regular basis to make sure the front wheels and steering components are unobstructed.

Carry Emergency Equipment

Depending on weather conditions, carry appropriate emergency equipment while driving. Some items you may want to carry include snow chains, tow straps or chains, a flashlight, emergency flares, sand, a shovel, jumper cables, an ice scraper, gloves, a ground cloth, coveralls, a blanket, etc.

Do not place objects or materials in the engine compartment

Placing objects or materials in the engine compartment may cause engine malfunction or fire, because they can block engine cooling. Damage of this kind is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
