Towing a Trailer

~2min read

If you plan to tow with your vehicle, you must first check the legal requirements of your country. Laws regarding towing requirements for trailers, cars or other types of vehicles or equipment may differ. Consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for further details before towing.

Remember that towing a trailer is different from driving the vehicle by itself. Towing means changes in handling, durability and fuel economy. Successful and safe towing requires the proper equipment, and it must be used correctly. Damage to your vehicle caused by improper trailer towing is not covered by the vehicle manufacturer's warranty.

This section contains many time-tested, important trailer towing tips and safety rules. Many of them are important for your safety and the safety of your passengers. Please read this section carefully before towing a trailer.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions:

  • If you do not use the proper equipment and/or drive improperly, you may lose control of the vehicle when towing a trailer. For example, if the trailer is too heavy, braking efficiency may be reduced. You and your passengers could be seriously or fatally injured. Tow a trailer only if you have followed all the steps in this section.
  • Before towing, make sure that the gross trailer weight, GCW (gross combined weight), GVW (gross vehicle weight), GAW (gross axle weight) and the trailer tongue load are all within limits.
  • When towing a trailer, be sure to turn off the ISG system.

Information

  • The technically permissible maximum load on the rear axle(s) may be exceeded by no more than 15% and the technically permissible maximum laden vehicle mass may be exceeded by no more than 10% or 100 kg (220.4 lb), whichever value is lower. In this case, do not exceed 62.1 mph (100 km/h) for M1 category vehicles or 80 km/h for N1 category vehicles.
  • If an M1 category vehicle is towing a trailer, additional load applied to the towing device may cause the maximum rated load to be exceeded, but by no more than 15%. In this case, do not exceed 62.1 mph (100 km/h) and increase the tire pressure by at least 0.2 bar.
