Driving Your Vehicle

Gear Selector Position

~4min read

P (Park)

Always come to a complete stop before shifting into P (Park).

To shift out of P (Park), you must firmly depress the brake pedal and make sure your foot is not on the accelerator pedal.

If you have done all of the above but still cannot move the shift lever out of P (Park), refer to "Shift Lock Release" in this section.

The shift lever must be in the P (Park) position before turning off the vehicle.

WARNING

  • Shifting into P (Park) while the vehicle is moving may cause you to lose control of the vehicle.
  • After stopping the vehicle, always make sure the shift lever is in P (Park), apply the parking brake, and turn off the vehicle.
  • When parking on a slope, shift the shift lever to the "Park" position and apply the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from rolling down the slope.
  • Do not use P (Park) as a substitute for the parking brake.

R (Reverse)

Use this position to drive the vehicle in reverse.

NOTICE

Always come to a complete stop before shifting into or out of R (Reverse). You may damage the transmission if you shift into R (Reverse) while the vehicle is moving.

N (Neutral)

The wheels and transmission are not engaged.

Always depress the brake pedal when shifting from N (Neutral) into another position.

WARNING

Do not drive with the shift lever in N (Neutral). The engine braking will not function and may cause an accident.

WARNING

Do not shift into gear while your foot is not firmly on the brake pedal. Shifting into gear while the engine is running at high speed may cause the vehicle to move very quickly. You may lose control of the vehicle and collide with people or objects.

D (Drive)

This is the normal driving position. The transmission automatically shifts through a sequence of six gears, providing the best fuel economy and performance.

For additional power when passing another vehicle or driving uphill, press the accelerator pedal further until you feel the transmission shift to a lower gear.

CAUTION

Fully depress the brake pedal to prevent unintended vehicle movement when stopping the vehicle.

If you drive the vehicle with the shift lever in the D (Drive) position, the vehicle automatically shifts to ECO mode.Hyundai Ioniq. Shift Lever PositionThe indicator light on the instrument cluster will illuminate.

When driving in ECO mode, the vehicle improves fuel economy for eco-friendly driving.

S (Sport)

If you drive the vehicle with the shift lever in the S (Sport) position, the vehicle automatically shifts to SPORT mode.Hyundai Ioniq. Shift Lever PositionThe indicator light on the instrument cluster will illuminate.

When driving in SPORT mode, the vehicle provides sporty yet confident driving.

Information

Fuel economy may decrease in SPORT mode.

Manual Shift Mode

Hyundai Ioniq. Shift Lever Position

Whether the vehicle is stopped or moving, manual shift mode is selected by moving the shift lever from the D (Drive) position into the manual shift gate. To return to D (Drive) range operation, push the shift lever back into the main shift gate.

In manual shift mode, moving the shift lever forward and back allows you to select the desired gear range for the current driving conditions.

+ (Up): Push the lever forward once to shift up one gear.

- (Down): Pull the lever backward once to shift down one gear.

Information

  • Only six forward gears can be selected. To reverse or park the vehicle, move the shift lever to the R (Reverse) or P (Park) position as required.
  • Downshifting occurs automatically when the vehicle decelerates. When the vehicle stops, 1st gear is automatically engaged.
  • When the engine speed approaches the red zone, the transmission upshifts automatically.
  • If the driver pushes the lever to the + (Up) or - (Down) position, the transmission may not perform the requested shift if the next gear is outside the permissible engine speed range. The driver should shift to higher gears according to road conditions and keep the engine speed below the red zone.

Shift Lock System

For your safety, the dual clutch transmission is equipped with a shift lock system that prevents shifting from P (Park) to R (Reverse) unless the brake pedal is depressed.

To shift from P (Park) to R (Reverse):

1. Depress and hold the brake pedal.

2. Start the vehicle or press the engine Start/Stop button to the ON position.

3. Move the shift lever.

If the shift lever cannot be moved from P (Park) to R (Reverse) with the brake pedal depressed, continue to depress the brake pedal, then do the following:

1. Press the engine Start/Stop button to the OFF position.

2. Apply the parking brake.

3. Carefully remove the cover (1) that covers the shift-lock release access hole.

4. Insert a tool (such as a flat-blade screwdriver) into the access hole and press down on the tool.

5. Move the shift lever.

6. Remove the tool from the shift-lock release access hole, then install the cover.

If it is necessary to use the shift-lock release, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer immediately.
