Engine Control System/Fuel System

Starter Motor Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

The starting system consists of the battery, starter, magnetic switch, ignition switch, park/neutral position (A/T) switch, clutch pedal switch (M/T), ignition lock switch, connecting wires, and battery cable. When the ignition key is turned to the START position, current flows to the starter solenoid coil and energizes it. When energized, the solenoid plunger and shift lever are actuated, and the pinion gear engages with the ring gear, closing the contacts and cranking the engine. To prevent damage caused by over-rotation of the starter armature when the engine starts, the overrunning clutch pinion disengages. Together with the ISG function, the starter must perform significantly more work. Therefore, the starter is designed for a considerably higher number of starting cycles. Starter components have been adapted to meet these higher requirements.
