Description and Operation

Description

The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS) detects the crankshaft position and is one of the most important sensors in the engine control system. If there is no CKPS input signal, the engine may stop due to the lack of this signal. This sensor is installed on the bracket and generates an alternating current with a magnetic flux field that is set by the sensor and the target wheel while the engine is running. The target wheel has 58 slots and 2 missing slots at every 360 °CA (crankshaft angle).

Troubleshooting

Signal Waveform

This example shows a typical signal from the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS) and Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS) at idle. The ECM controls fuel injection distribution using these signals. The CKPS signal is normally used to determine piston position, and the CMPS signal is used to determine the TDC of each cylinder.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Check the CKPS and CMPS signal waveform using the GDS.

    Specification: Refer to "Waveform"

DEPOSIT

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector (A), then remove the sensor (B) by removing the mounting bolt.

REMEDY

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Crankshaft position sensor mounting bolt: 7.8 – 11.8 N·m
