Description and Operation

Description

The heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) consists of zirconia and alumina and is installed before and after the catalytic converter. The output voltage of the sensor depends on the air/fuel ratio. For proper operation, the sensor must be warm. To keep it warm, the sensor has a heater controlled by the engine control module using a duty cycle signal. When the exhaust gas temperature is below a specified value, the heater warms the sensor tip.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Disconnect the HO2S connector.
  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 2 and 5 [B1/S1] of the HO2S.
  4. Measure the resistance between terminals 3 and 4 [B1/S2] of the HO2S.
  5. Check that the resistance is within specification.

    Specification: Refer to "Specifications"

DEPOSIT

[Bank 1 / Sensor 1]

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the connector (A) and remove the sensor (B).
