Description and Operation

Description

Knock is a phenomenon characterized by vibration and undesirable noise, and it can lead to engine damage. The knock sensor (KS) is installed on the cylinder block and detects engine knock. When knock occurs, the vibration of the cylinder block is applied to the piezoelectric element as pressure. When knock occurs, the sensor outputs a voltage signal. The ECM retards ignition timing when knock occurs. If knock stops after ignition timing retard, the ECM advances ignition timing again. This sequential control can improve engine torque, engine output and fuel economy.
