STARTING AND OPERATING

If the Engine Does Not Start

~1min read

If the engine does not start after following the "Normal Starting" or "Extremely Cold Weather" procedure, it may be flooded. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and hold it there. Crank the engine for no more than 15 seconds. This should clear excess fuel if the engine is flooded. Leave the ignition in the RUN position, release the accelerator pedal, and repeat the "Normal Starting" procedure.

  • Never pour fuel or other flammable liquid into the throttle body air intake in an attempt to start the vehicle. This could cause a sudden fire resulting in serious personal injury.
  • Do not attempt to push or tow the vehicle to start it. Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission cannot be started this way. Unburned fuel may enter the catalytic converter and ignite after the engine starts, damaging the converter and vehicle.
  • If the vehicle battery is discharged, jumper cables can be used to start the vehicle from an auxiliary battery or a battery in another vehicle. This type of start can be dangerous if not performed correctly. Refer to page 368.
