STARTING AND OPERATING

Possible reasons the engine does not stop automatically

~1min read

Before stopping the engine, the system checks many safety and comfort conditions to see if they are met. Detailed information on Stop/Start system operation may be displayed on the Stop/Start screen in the instrument cluster display. Situations in which the engine will not stop include (but are not limited to):

  • The driver's seat belt is not fastened.
  • The driver's door is not closed.
  • Battery temperature is too high or too low.
  • The battery charge is low.
  • The vehicle is on a steep grade.
  • Cabin heating or cooling is in progress and the desired cabin temperature has not been reached.
  • The gear selector is in MANUAL (M) mode.
  • HVAC is set to full defrost at high fan speed.
  • HVAC is set to MAX A/C.
  • The engine has not reached normal operating temperature.
  • Engine temperature is too high.
  • The transmission is not in a forward gear.
  • The hood is open.
  • The transfer case is in 4WD Low or N (Neutral).
  • The brake pedal is not pressed with sufficient force.
  • Accelerator pedal input.
  • The vehicle speed threshold has not been reached since the previous Autostop.
  • Steering angle is above the threshold (ESS models only).
  • ACC is on and a set speed is selected.
  • The vehicle is at high altitude.
  • A system malfunction is present.

The vehicle may be driven several times without the Stop/Start system entering the STOP/START READY state under more extreme conditions than those listed above.
