Towing Requirements - Trailer Brakes

~1min read
  • Do not connect the trailer's hydraulic brake system or vacuum system to your vehicle's system. This may result in inadequate braking and possible injury.
  • An electronically controlled trailer brake controller is required when towing a trailer with electric brakes. When towing a trailer with a surge-actuated hydraulic brake system, an electronic brake controller is not required.
  • Trailer brakes are recommended for trailers over 1000 lb (453 kg) and are required for trailers over 2000 lb (907 kg).
  • Do not connect trailer brakes to the vehicle's hydraulic brake lines. This may overload your braking system and cause it to fail. You may not have brakes when you need them and may be involved in an accident.
  • Towing any trailer will increase your stopping distance. When towing, allow additional space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you. Failure to do so may result in an accident.
