Removal

  1. If the compressor is locked up, run the engine at idle and let the air conditioner operate for a few minutes, then stop the engine.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Recover the refrigerant using a recovery/recharging station.
  4. Loosen the drive belt. (Refer to EM group - Drive Belt)
  5. Remove the bolts, then disconnect the suction line (A) and discharge line (B) from the compressor. Plug or cap the lines immediately after disconnecting them to prevent moisture and dirt from entering.
  6. Remove the front lower engine compartment cover (A) by loosening the mounting bolts.
  7. Remove the right side engine compartment cover (A) by loosening the mounting bolts.
  8. 6. Disconnect the compressor clutch connector (A), then remove the 4 mounting bolts and the compressor (B).

Installation

  1. Check the length of the compressor mounting bolts, then tighten them in the order A→B→C→D.

    Tightening torque: 20.0~33 N·m

  2. Install in the reverse order of removal, and pay attention to the following items.
    • If installing a new compressor, drain all refrigerant oil from the removed compressor and measure its volume. Subtract the volume of drained oil from 120 cm³ (4.20 fl oz) to obtain the quantity of oil to be drained from the new compressor (through the suction port).
    • Replace the O-rings with new ones at each fitting and apply a thin coat of refrigerant oil before installing them. Be sure to use O-rings suitable for R-134a to prevent leaks.
    • To avoid contamination, do not return spilled oil to the container, and never mix it with other refrigerant oils.
    • Replace the cap immediately after using the oil.

Inspection

  1. Check the galvanic parts of the limiter assembly (A) for color change, flaking, or other damage. If damaged, replace the limiter assembly.
  2. Check the bearing play of the pulley (B) and rotate the pulley by hand. Replace the limiter assembly if it is noisy or has excessive play/drag.
    • Do not spill refrigerant oil on the vehicle; it may damage the paint. If refrigerant oil gets on the paint, wipe it off immediately.
    • Adjust the drive belt.
    • Charge the system and check that it operates properly.

Inspection of Compressor with External Control Valve (GDS)

Compressor type: Fixed displacement compressor, externally controlled valve, internally controlled valve. For the fixed type and internally controlled valve, compressor operation can be checked by the clutch noise. However, for the externally controlled valve, this cannot be checked this way because there is no clutch. Therefore, the ECV should be checked using GDS as shown below.
  1. Connect GDS to the vehicle and select "A/C Compressor Test (ECV Type)". [ECV1]
  2. Prepare the vehicle according to the GDS instructions on the monitor. (Turn off only the A/C switch) [ECV2]
    [ECV3]
  3. Before inspecting the ECV, check whether any other DTCs are present in the compressor. If so, resolve those first. If not, press the "OK" button to continue.
Do not continue the inspection if the following DTCs are detected: B1241, B1242, B1672, B1685, B1686, B1687.
    [ECV4]
  4. Start the inspection [ECV5]
    [ECV6]
  5. Check the inspection result. [ECV7]
    [ECV8]
  6. If the result displays "Check", press "Check" and follow the instructions.
  7. Recheck the ECV from the first step.

Disassembly

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the front right wheel (A) from the front hub.

    Tightening torque: 88.2~108 N·m

  3. Separate the front part of the front wheel guard cover (A) from the wheel base.
  4. Remove the front lower engine compartment cover (A) by loosening the mounting bolts.
  5. Remove the center bolt (A) while holding the limiter assembly. Use a commercially available limiter bolt puller and Special Service Tool 09977-3R000.

    Tightening torque: 8.8~13.7 N·m

  6. Remove the expansion assembly (A) and the gasket (slotted washer). Be careful not to lose the gaskets.

    Tightening torque: 4.9~6.9 N·m

  7. Remove the drive belt. (Refer to Group EM - "Timing Chain")
  8. Remove the snap ring (A) using snap ring pliers, then remove the pulley (B).
    • Be careful not to damage the pulley (B) and compressor during removal/installation.
    • After removing the snap ring (A), replace it with a new one.
  9. Reassemble the compressor clutch in the reverse order of disassembly, and pay attention to the following items:
    • Clean the sliding surfaces of the pulley and compressor with a non-oil solvent.
    • Install new snap rings and make sure they are fully seated in the groove.
    • Make sure the pulley rotates smoothly after reassembly.
