Remove the crankshaft (A) from the cylinder block, taking care not to damage the journals.

Remove the CKPS wheel (A) from the crankshaft.

Inspection
Pilot Bearing
Inspect the pilot bearing.
Make sure the pilot bearing (A) is not visibly damaged.

Check for noise by rotating the inner race (A) of the pilot bearing.

If damage or noise is found, replace the crankshaft together with the pilot bearing.
Crankshaft
Check the oil clearance of the crankshaft main bearings.
To check the main bearing oil clearance, remove the main bearing caps with their lower bearings.
Clean each main journal and lower bearing with a clean shop towel.
Place one strip of Plastigage on each main journal.
Install the main bearing caps with their lower bearings in place, then tighten the bolts.
Tightening torque: 17.7–22 N·m + 88 – 92°
Remove the main bearing caps and lower bearings again, then measure the widest part of the Plastigage.
Main bearing oil clearance No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5: 0.020–0.041 mm (0.0008–0.0016 in.)

If the Plastigage is too wide or too narrow, remove the upper and lower bearings, then install new bearings with the same color code. Re-check the oil clearance.
If the Plastigage indicates that the clearance is still incorrect, try the next larger or smaller bearing. Recheck the oil clearance.
Select the bearing using the selection table.
Letters are stamped on the side of the block as a marking for the size of each of the 5 main journal bores.
Use them, and the numbers or letters stamped on the handle (main journal bore size marks), to correctly select the bearings.

(0.0793–0.0794 in.)

Check the crankshaft end play.
Using a dial indicator, measure the crankshaft thrust clearance by prying the crankshaft forward and rearward with a screwdriver.
Crankshaft Thrust Clearance
Standard: 0.05–0.25 mm (0.0020–0.0098 in.)
Limit: 0.30 mm (0.0118 in.)
If the thrust clearance is greater than specified, replace the center bearing.
Installation
When replacing, check whether the pilot bearing (A) is installed in the crankshaft or the engine.
If it is not installed, be sure to install the pilot bearing (A).

Install the CKPS wheel (A).
Tightening Torque: 9.8–10.7 N·m

Install the crankshaft main bearings.
Align the bearing tab with the tab groove of the cylinder block, and insert the 5 upper bearings (A).

Align the bearing tab with the tab groove of the main bearing cap (B), then insert the five lower bearings (A).

Apply a coat of engine oil after installing the main bearings.
Install the thrust bearings (No. 3 journal).
Install the 2 thrust bearings (B) on both sides of the No. 3 journal of the cylinder block with the oil groove (A) facing outward.

Install the crankshaft to the cylinder block.
Apply a coat of engine oil to the pins and main journals after assembling the crankshaft.
Install the main bearing caps and tighten the main bearing cap bolts.
Apply a thin coat of engine oil to the bolt threads. Tighten all bolts to the specified torque in numerical order first, then tighten all bolts to the specified angle in numerical order.
Tightening torque: 17.7–22 N·m + 88° – 92°
Using SST (09221 - 4A000), tighten the main bearing cap bolts (A).

Make sure the crankshaft rotates smoothly.
Check the crankshaft end play.
Install the piston and connecting rod assembly.
(Refer to Cylinder Block Assembly - Piston and Connecting Rod)
Install the oil pan frame.
Apply liquid sealant to the ladder frame.
Bead width: 2.5–3.5 mm (0.0984–0.1378 in.)

Install the oil pan frame (A).
Tightening torque: 18.6 – 24 N·m

Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
