Hill-start Assist Control (HAC)
In this manual: Kia Sorento XM Owner's Manual.
~3min read
The vehicle tends to roll backward on a steep slope when it starts moving after stopping. Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) prevents the vehicle from rolling back by automatically applying the brakes for approximately 1.5 seconds. The brakes are released when the accelerator pedal is pressed or after approximately 1.5 seconds.
WARNING
HAC operates for only approximately 1.5 seconds, so always press the accelerator pedal when starting off on a hill.
✽ NOTICE
- HAC does not operate when the shift lever is in the P (Park) or N (Neutral) position.
- HAC activates even when ESC is turned off, but does not activate if the ESC is malfunctioning.
Proper Braking Practice
WARNING
- Whenever you leave or park your vehicle, always set the parking brake as firmly as possible, and shift the vehicle into 1st (first) gear or R (Reverse) for a manual transmission, or P (Park) for an automatic transmission. If the parking brake is not fully engaged, the vehicle may move unintentionally and cause injury or other damage.
- Always make sure the parking brake is fully applied when parking all vehicles to prevent unintended vehicle movement that may injure passengers or pedestrians.
- Make sure the parking brake is released and the parking brake indicator light goes off before driving.
- When driving through water, the brakes may get wet. They may also get wet when the vehicle is washed. Wet brakes can be dangerous! Your vehicle will not stop as quickly if the brakes are wet. Wet brakes may cause the vehicle to pull to one side. To dry the brakes, lightly apply the brake pedal until normal braking action returns, while keeping the vehicle under control at all times. If normal braking action does not return, stop as soon as it is safe to do so and contact an authorized Kia dealer for assistance.
- Never coast down a slope with the vehicle in neutral. This is extremely dangerous. Always keep the vehicle in gear, use the brakes to slow down, and then shift to a lower gear so that engine braking helps you maintain a safe speed.
- Do not "pump" the brake pedal. Resting your foot on the brake pedal while driving can be dangerous, as the brakes may overheat and lose effectiveness. It also increases wear on brake system components.
- If a tire goes flat while driving, apply the brake pedal gently and keep the vehicle pointed straight ahead while slowing down. When you are moving slowly enough to do so safely, steer off the road and stop in a safe place.
- If your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, do not allow the vehicle to creep forward. To prevent creeping forward, firmly keep your foot on the brake pedal when stopping the vehicle.
- Be careful when parking on a hill. Firmly apply the parking brake and shift the shift lever into P (automatic transmission) or into first or reverse gear (manual transmission). If your vehicle is facing downhill, turn the front wheels toward the curb to prevent the vehicle from rolling. If your vehicle is facing uphill, turn the front wheels away from the curb so that the vehicle does not roll. If there is no curb, or if conditions otherwise require holding the vehicle from rolling, block the wheels.
- Under certain conditions, the parking brake may freeze in the applied position. This most often occurs when snow or ice accumulates around or near the rear brakes, or if the brakes are wet. If there is a risk that the parking brake may freeze, apply it only temporarily while placing the shift lever in P (automatic transmission) or in first or reverse gear (manual transmission), and block the rear wheels so that the vehicle cannot roll. Then release the parking brake.
- Do not hold the vehicle on a hill with the accelerator pedal. This may cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brake pedal or the parking brake.
