Trailer Hitches
Choosing the correct tow hitch is very important. Crosswinds, wind from passing trucks and driving on poor roads are some of the reasons you need a suitable towing device. Observe the following rules:
- Is it necessary to drill holes in the body to install the tow hitch? If so, make sure the drilled holes are sealed when the tow hitch is removed. If the drilled holes are not sealed, dirt and water may enter the vehicle, and deadly carbon monoxide (CO) from the exhaust gases may enter the passenger compartment.
- The bumpers of your vehicle are not intended for attaching towing devices. Do not attach tow hitches or other devices to the bumper for towing. Use only tow hitches that are attached to the body and not the bumper.
- Kia tow hitch accessories are available from a Kia dealer/service partner.
Safety Chains
When towing, the towing vehicle and trailer must always be connected with safety chains. Cross the safety chains under the trailer tongue so that the tongue does not drop to the ground if it becomes disconnected from the towing vehicle.
Instructions for safety chains can be found from the tow hitch manufacturer or the trailer manufacturer. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for attaching the safety chains. Leave enough slack in the chains to allow the trailer to turn corners. Safety chains may drag but must never be dragged on the ground.
Trailer Brakes
If your trailer is equipped with brakes, make sure they comply with national regulations, are properly attached and operate correctly.
If your trailer exceeds the maximum trailer weight and the brakes are not applied, the trailer must be equipped with its own brakes that match its weight. Read and follow the trailer brake manufacturer's instructions to ensure the brake is properly installed, adjusted and maintained.
- Do not modify the vehicle's braking system.
WARNING
Trailer Brakes
Do not use a trailer with trailer brakes unless you are sure the brakes have been installed correctly. Trailer brake installation must not be performed by unqualified persons. Leave this work to a specialized workshop.
