Lock Protection Before Freezing

~2min read

To prevent the locks from freezing, spray commercially available de-icer or glycerin into the lock cylinders. If ice has formed on the lock, spray the lock with de-icer to remove the ice. If the lock is frozen inside, you may be able to thaw it with a heated key. Handle the heated key carefully to avoid injury.

Use Commercially Available Antifreeze Washer Fluid

To prevent the washer system from freezing, mix the washer fluid with a commercially available antifreeze according to the instructions on its packaging. Antifreeze for the washer system is available from a Kia dealer/service partner or an auto parts store. Do not use engine coolant or other types of antifreeze, as they may damage the vehicle paint.

Prevent the Parking Brake from Freezing

Under certain conditions, the parking brake may freeze in the applied position. This is most likely when snow or ice has accumulated on the rear brakes or when the brakes are wet. If there is a risk of the parking brake freezing, apply the parking brake temporarily while placing the transmission in Park (P) (automatic transmission) or first gear (manual transmission), and block the rear wheels so the vehicle cannot roll away. Then release the parking brake.

Prevent Snow and Ice from Accumulating on the Front Wheel Housings

Under certain conditions, snow and ice may accumulate in the wheel housings and affect steering. When driving in winter conditions, regularly check the underside of the vehicle and make sure the front wheels and steering are not blocked.
