What to Do in an Emergency

Quick Start

~4min read

Jump starting can be dangerous if performed incorrectly. To avoid injury to yourself or damage to your vehicle or battery, follow the jump starting procedure. If you are unsure, we strongly recommend that you have a qualified technician or towing service move the vehicle.

CAUTION

Use only a 12-volt jump system. You may damage the 12-volt starter motor, ignition system and other non-repairable electrical parts by using a 24-volt power source (either two 12-volt batteries in series or a 24-volt motor-generator set).

WARNING - Battery

Never attempt to check the electrolyte level or charge of the battery, as this may cause the battery to rupture or explode, causing serious injury.

WARNING - Battery

  • Keep all flames and sparks away from the battery. The battery produces hydrogen gas, which may explode on contact with a flame or spark.
If these instructions are not followed precisely, serious personal injury and vehicle damage may occur! If you are not sure how to follow this procedure, seek qualified assistance. Vehicle batteries contain sulfuric acid. It is poisonous and highly corrosive. When handling the battery, wear protective goggles and be careful not to get acid on yourself, your clothing or the vehicle.
  • Do not attempt to start the vehicle if the battery is discharged, frozen or if the electrolyte level is low; the battery may rupture or explode.
  • Do not allow the (+) and (-) jumper cables to touch each other. This may cause sparks.
  • The battery may rupture or explode when you jump start a discharged or frozen battery.

Jump Starting Procedure

CAUTION - AGM battery (if equipped)

  • Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are maintenance-free, and we recommend that AGM batteries be serviced by an authorized Kia dealer. To charge your AGM battery, use only automatic chargers specifically designed for AGM batteries.
  • When replacing an AGM battery, we recommend that you use replacement parts from an authorized Kia dealer.
  • Do not open or remove the cap on the top of the battery. This may cause internal electrolyte leakage, which may result in serious injury.
  • If the AGM battery is reconnected or replaced, the ISG function will not operate immediately.
If you want to use the ISG function, the battery sensor must be calibrated for approximately 4 hours with the ignition switched off.

✽ NOTICE

If the battery is discharged, the engine can be started using another vehicle's battery and two jumper cables. Only use jumper cables with fully insulated clamp handles.

To avoid injury or damage to both vehicles, strictly follow the procedure below.

1. Make sure the booster battery is 12 volts and that its negative terminal is grounded.

2. If the booster battery is in another vehicle, do not allow the vehicles to touch.

3. Turn off all unnecessary electrical loads.

4. Connect the jumper cables in the exact sequence shown in the illustration. First connect one end of the positive jumper cable to the positive terminal of the discharged battery (1), then connect the other end to the positive terminal of the booster battery (2). Next, connect one end of the other jumper cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery (3), then connect the other end to a solid, stationary, metal point (for example, the engine lifting bracket) away from the battery (4). Do not connect to or near any moving part when the engine is running. Make sure there is no contact between the bodies of the two vehicles; otherwise, there is a risk of short circuit.

Do not allow the jumper cables to contact anything other than the correct battery terminal or correct ground. Do not lean over the battery when making connections.

WARNING! Battery Cables

Do not connect the jumper cable from the negative terminal of the booster battery to the negative terminal of the discharged battery. This may cause the battery to overheat and crack, releasing battery acid.

Be sure to connect one end of the jumper cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery and the other end to a metal point far away from the battery.

5. Start the engine of the vehicle with the booster battery and let it run at 2000 rpm, then start the engine of the vehicle with the discharged battery. If the first starting attempt fails, wait a few minutes before making another attempt to allow the discharged battery to recharge.

If the cause of battery discharge is not obvious, we recommend that the system be inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.
