Starting the engine
Always wear appropriate shoes when operating the vehicle. Inappropriate shoes (high heels, ski boots or others) may interfere with the use of the brake pedal, accelerator pedal and clutch pedal (if equipped).
Starting the engine with the ignition key (if equipped)
- Make sure the parking brake is set.
- Manual transaxle - Fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the shift lever to neutral. Keep the clutch pedal and brake pedal depressed while you turn the ignition key to START.
Automatic transaxle - Shift the shift lever to P (Park).
Press the brake pedal fully.
You can also start the engine by setting the shift lever to N (Neutral).Whether the engine is cold or warm, you should start it without pressing the accelerator pedal.
CAUTIONIf the engine stalls while driving, do not move the shift lever to P (Park). If traffic and road conditions permit, you can move the lever to N (Neutral) while the vehicle is still moving and turn the ignition key to START to try to restart the engine.
CAUTIONDo not engage the starter for more than 10 seconds. If the engine stalls or does not start, wait 5 to 10 seconds before engaging the starter again. Improper use of the starter could damage it.

Starting the engine with the smart key (if equipped)
- Keep the smart key on you or in the vehicle.
- Make sure the parking brake is applied.
- AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE - Shift the transaxle lever to P (Park). Fully depress the brake pedal
- Press the ENGINE START/STOP button while depressing the brake pedal.
- In extremely cold weather (below -18C/0F) or if the vehicle has not been used for several days, let the engine warm up without pressing the accelerator pedal.
Whether the engine is cold or warm, it should start without your having to press the accelerator pedal.
- The engine may not start if the key is away from you, even if it is inside the vehicle.
- When the ENGINE START/STOP button is in ACC or another position and a door is open, the system searches for the smart key. If it is not in the vehicle, the "Key is not in vehicle" warning appears on the LCD screen. If all doors are closed, the chime sounds for 5 seconds.
The indicator or warning turns off as soon as the vehicle is in motion.
Always keep the smart key with you. WARNINGThe engine will start only if the smart key is inside the vehicle.
Never allow a child or a person unfamiliar with the vehicle to touch the ENGINE START/STOP button or its related parts.
CAUTIONIf the engine stalls while the vehicle is moving, do not try to move the shift lever to P (Park). If road and traffic conditions permit, you may shift to N (Neutral) while the vehicle is still rolling, and press the ENGINE START/STOP button to attempt to restart the engine.

NOTICE
- If the battery is weak or the smart key does not work properly, you can start the engine by inserting the smart key into its key holder. To separate the smart key from its key holder, press it in first, then pull it out.
- If the brake light fuse is blown, you cannot start the engine normally. Replace the fuse. If this is not possible, you can start the engine by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button for 10 seconds in the ACC position.
Do not press the ENGINE START/STOP button for more than 10 seconds, unless the brake light fuse is blown.
