Ignition Switch Illumination

For convenience, the ignition switch illuminates whenever you open a front door and as long as the ignition key is not in the ON position. The switch illumination turns off as soon as you turn the ignition key or 30 seconds after you close the door.

Ignition Key Position

LOCK

The steering wheel locks to protect against theft (if equipped). The ignition key can only be removed in the LOCK position.

To move the key to the LOCK position, push it in slightly to the ACC position, then turn it to LOCK.

ACC (accessory)

The steering wheel is unlocked (if equipped) and the electrical accessories are powered.

ON

The warning lights can be checked before starting the engine. This is the normal operating position once the engine is running.

Do not leave the key in ON when the engine is off, as this may drain the battery.

START

Turn the key to START to start the engine. The starter motor operates as long as you hold the key; the key then returns to the ON position.

You can check the brake warning light in this position.

WARNING - Ignition key
  • Never turn the ignition key to LOCK or ACC while the vehicle is moving. You could lose control of the steering and brakes and have an accident.
  • Before leaving the vehicle, always make sure the gear shift lever is in 1st gear (manual transmission) or in P (automatic transmission), the parking brake is firmly applied and the engine is off. Failure to take these precautions could cause the vehicle to move suddenly and unexpectedly.
  • Never reach through the steering wheel to grab the ignition key or touch a control while the vehicle is moving. You could take control of the vehicle and cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
  • Do not place any loose objects around the driver's seat, as they could move, interfere with the driver and cause an accident.
