Description and Operation

Description

The AC generator has eight built-in diodes, each of which converts alternating current to direct current. Therefore, direct current appears at the generator B terminal. In addition, the charging voltage of this generator is regulated by the battery voltage sensing system. The main components of the generator are the rotor, stator, rectifier, brushes, bearings, and the poly-V belt pulley. The brush holder contains a built-in electronic voltage regulator.

Repair Procedures

Removal

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
  2. Remove the air cleaner. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Air Cleaner")
  3. Disconnect the generator connector (A) and the generator "B" cable (B) from the terminal.

    Tightening torque: 13.7 - 17.7 N·m

  4. Remove the drive belt. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Drive Belt")
  5. Remove the intake manifold. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Intake Manifold")
  6. Remove the generator mounting bolts (A). Tightening torque: Generator upper mounting bolt: 29.4–41 N·m Generator lower mounting bolt: 21.6–32 N·m
  7. Remove the alternator (A).

Installation

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.
  2. After installation, adjust the alternator belt tension. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Drive Belt")
  3. Install the generator.

Disassembly

  1. Remove the rear cover (A).
  2. Remove the regulator assembly (A) after loosening the mounting bolts.
  3. Remove the OAP cover (A).
  4. Using SST (09373-27000), remove the OAP pulley (A).
  5. Remove the rectifier assembly (A) after disconnecting the stator wires.
  6. Loosen the through bolts (A).
  7. Separate the rotor (A) and housing (B).

Installation

  1. Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly.

Inspection

[Rotor]

  1. Check the slip rings (C) for continuity.
  2. Check that there is no continuity between the slip rings and the rotor (B) or the rotor shaft (A).
  3. If the rotor fails the continuity check, replace the generator.

[Stator]

  1. Check for continuity between each pair of wires (A).
  2. Make sure there is no continuity between each terminal and the coil core.
  3. If the coil fails the continuity check, replace the generator.
