Description and Operation

Description

Failure of gasoline engine control system components (sensors, ECM, injector, etc.) may cause fuel supply to stop or the proper amount of fuel to not be supplied for various engine operating conditions. The following symptoms may occur:
  1. Engine is hard to start or does not start at all.
  2. Unstable idle.
  3. Poor drivability
If any of the above conditions occur, first perform general diagnosis including basic engine checks (ignition system malfunction, incorrect engine adjustment, etc.). Then inspect the gasoline engine control system components with KDS.Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) [OBD]: The malfunction indicator lamp illuminates to notify the driver that there is a problem with the vehicle. However, the MIL will turn off automatically after 3 consecutive driving cycles without the same malfunction. Immediately after the ignition switch is turned ON (engine not started), the MIL will remain illuminated to indicate that the MIL is functioning properly. Malfunctions with the following items illuminate the MIL.
  • Catalyst
  • Fuel System
  • Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAPS)
  • Intake Air Temperature Sensor
  • Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
  • ETC Module (TPS and ETC Motor)
  • Heated oxygen sensor (upstream)
  • Heated Oxygen Sensor Heater (Upstream)
  • Heated Oxygen Sensor (Downstream)
  • Heated oxygen sensor heater (downstream)
  • Injector
  • misfire
  • Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
  • Camshaft Position Sensor
  • Evaporative Emission Control System
  • Vehicle speed sensor
  • Power Supply
  • PCM/PCM
  • MT coding
  • Acceleration Sensor
  • MIL-ON Request Signal
  • Power Stage
[Non-EOBD]: The malfunction indicator lamp illuminates to notify the driver that there is a problem with the vehicle.
  • Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S)
  • Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAPS)
  • Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS)
  • ETC Module (TPS and ETC Motor)
  • Injectors
  • ECM
[Inspection]
  1. After turning the ignition ON, check that the indicator light comes on for approximately 5 seconds and then turns off.
  2. If the lamp does not come on, check for an open circuit in the wiring harness, a blown fuse, or a burned-out bulb.
ECM self-diagnosis monitors input/output signals (some signals continuously, the rest under specific conditions). When the ECM detects a malfunction, it stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) and outputs a signal to the data link connector. Diagnostic results can be read with the MIL or KDS. DTCs will remain in the ECM as long as battery power is maintained. However, DTCs will be erased when the battery terminal or ECM connector is disconnected, or when cleared with KDS.Relationship between DTC and Driving Mode in EOBD System
  1. When the same malfunction is detected and stored during two consecutive driving cycles, the MIL will illuminate automatically.
  2. The MIL turns off automatically if no malfunction is detected during 3 consecutive driving cycles.
  3. A DTC is stored in the ECM memory when a malfunction is detected during two consecutive driving cycles. The MIL illuminates when the malfunction is detected in the second driving cycle. When a misfire is detected, the DTC is stored and the MIL illuminates immediately after the first detection.
  4. A DTC will be automatically erased from the ECM memory if the same malfunction is not detected during 40 driving cycles.
