While Driving

Hill Launch Assist (HLA)

~2min read

Hill Launch Assist (HLA) is a function that helps the driver accelerate on a slope from a stopped state. When the driver releases the brake pedal and depresses the accelerator pedal on a slope, the function prevents the vehicle from rolling back.

The braking force is automatically held after the brake pedal is released on a steep slope.

For vehicles with a manual transmission, Hill Launch Assist (HLA) activates on a downhill slope when the shift lever is in reverse (R), and on an uphill slope when the shift lever is in any position other than reverse (R).

For vehicles with an automatic transmission, Hill Launch Assist (HLA) activates on a downhill slope when the shift lever is in reverse (R), and on an uphill slope when the shift lever is in a forward driving range.

WARNING

Do not rely entirely on Hill Launch Assist (HLA):

Hill Launch Assist (HLA) is an auxiliary device to assist acceleration on a slope from a stopped position. The system operates for approximately two seconds only, so it is dangerous to rely entirely on the system when accelerating from a stopped position, as the vehicle may move (roll) suddenly and cause an accident.

The vehicle may roll depending on its load or if it is towing something. Additionally, for vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, the vehicle may still roll depending on how the clutch pedal or accelerator pedal is operated.

Always confirm that the area around the vehicle is safe before starting to drive.

NOTE

  • Hill Launch Assist (HLA) does not activate on a gentle slope. Furthermore, the degree of incline on which the system activates changes depending on the vehicle load.
  • Hill Launch Assist (HLA) does not activate when the parking brake is applied, when the vehicle is completely stopped, or when the clutch pedal is released.
  • When Hill Launch Assist (HLA) is operating, the brake pedal may feel harder and may vibrate; however, this does not indicate a malfunction.
  • Hill Launch Assist (HLA) does not operate when the TCS/DSC indicator light is on. Refer to Warning/Indicator Lights on page 4-24.
  • Hill Launch Assist (HLA) is not deactivated even if the DSC OFF switch is pressed to turn off TCS/DSC.
