WARNING

Do not turn off the engine while the vehicle is moving:

It is dangerous to turn off the engine while the vehicle is moving for any reason other than an emergency. If the engine is stopped while the vehicle is moving, braking performance will be reduced due to the loss of power steering assistance, and an accident and serious injury may result.

  1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
  2. (Manual transmission) Shift to neutral.

(Automatic transmission) Move the selector lever to the P position.

  3. Press the engine start button to stop the engine. The ignition switch is in the OFF position.

WARNING

When leaving the vehicle, make sure the engine start button is in the OFF position.

NOTE

  • The engine cooling fan may continue to run for a few minutes after the ignition switch is turned from ON to OFF, whether the air conditioner is on or off, in order to quickly cool the engine compartment.
  • If the system detects that the remaining battery power of the key is insufficient when the ignition switch is turned from ON to ACC or OFF, the following is indicated. Replace the battery with a new one before the key becomes unusable. Refer to Replacing the battery on page 6-34. (Vehicles equipped with instrument panel type A) A message is displayed on the instrument panel screen. (Vehicles equipped with instrument panel type B) The KEY indicator light (green) on the instrument panel flashes for approximately 30 seconds.
  • (Automatic transaxle) If the engine is turned off when the shift lever is in a position other than P, the ignition switch will be in the ACC position.

Emergency engine stop

Pressing the engine start button continuously while the engine is running or the vehicle is being driven, or pressing it repeatedly in quick succession, will immediately stop the engine.

The ignition switch will be in the ACC position.
